I was in Hamburg over the summer and spent quite a few days around the building (it's actually huuuuge...), but it wasn't open to visitors at the time. Kind of jealous of the people who get to go see concerts there. t_t

Yes, it looks like styrofoam or poured concrete!

Yes, that comment was before I saw pictures of the holes in all of the walls in addition to the ceilings. Just think of all the "theatre dust" (dander from the audience) that will collect there! ACHOO!

Here's a link to the concert (I don't know how long it will be available)

The orchestra starts playing at about 00:21:00.

Thanks, interesting link! There is a lot about the acoustics, they interview the acoustic expert and show a bit about the design process. It looks like the wall tiles are specially made with a CNC machine.

Yes it's hard to find photos of that... I think here is one (you need to click on the link, pianoworld does not recognise the URL as an image even though I say it's an image...)

If anyone still hasn't had their fill of this hall yet, here's yet more stuff about it - including interviews with the hall's director, among others:

Thank you!! I'm sure that's it (I've read that the Small Hall is "shoe-box" in shape with walls of wood).

As for the NY Times link - I was able to access the article earlier today without any problem - now I need a subscription to view it again. ha

As far as I know, it is a historical monument, a former magazin of the harbour, and therefore the architects have been required to keep it and find a way to make the concert hall. The winning bid was the one putting this high thing on top of it. There was a similar bid, years before, with a not as high similar thing on the top of the old monument, but that time such idea was completely rejected. For what reason ever, the other finally winning architects have been celebrated for their design which in my opinion smothers the historical monument.
This is correct. I am living in Hamburg, watched the television broadcast of the inauguration concert. Fantastic. The acoustics of the hall were designed by a famous Japanese sound architect (if such word exists). Overall costs were ten times higher than planned because of mismanagement and underestimation of the project by the local administration.
