I have some exercises from the school of ragtime by Scott Joplin. Three pages long with 6 exercises I downloaded from CD Sheet Music.

These exercises look difficult. Have any of you used these before? Are they worth the time that they will take to master?

Dear John F,

Ragtime is difficult, it is as difficult as these exercises. They reflect things which really do occur in original ragtime pieces. Joplin wrote this short introduction for persons who are new to ragtime and want to get familiar with this style and how to play it.

If you are not able to play these exercises you will not be able to play Joplin's rags (in the original version). However, if you are already familiar with ragtime, you do not need to go through this "school" and can start playing Joplin right away.

All in all, my impression is that most amateur pianists can neither play the exercises nor a real Joplin rag correctly.

I am an amateur pianist. I think, with a lot of practice I can work my way through all six exercises. My concern is that I do not want to spend a lot of time on something that I do not need. From your comments I assume that they are important and should be learned. I am working on that now. Thank you, John F.
