I am planning to buy a small grand piano about 10K.
The Kohler small grand kig 47 is 7k out of the door. The KIG 47 is not listed on manufacture website. I guess it is discontinued.
The yamaha gb1 is 10,500 plus tax (I have not negotiate on price yet).
I played both pianos. I am leaning toward the GB1, because I liked the sound better.
Should I look for other brand like a Young Chang grand piano? My budget allows price around 10K.
Please advise. I live in FL.
Thanks.

Both would be considered to be too short for a good sound. It might be better to see what the Nordiska 5'5" or Hamilton H398 that has a solid soundboard would cost and sound like.

I would stay away from the KIG47 as it contains a laminated spruce soundboard. this drastically affects the tone in a negative direction. I am not sure if the GB1 is laminated. A Young Chang may be a good bet...there are several series to choose from.

Dear Zui,

There are lots of choices in this price range. I would advise you to buy The Piano Book by Larry Fine and the 2007-08 addendum.

K&C makes 5'- 5'7" range pianos as well that would have a bigger better tone than the 4'7". One of these ought to be in your price range. K&C is made by Samick, who has other products in this range as well.

Visit www.smcmusic.com to see their other choices. Pianomadam mentioned Young Chang as well. This is also a good choice to pursue.

Good luck and keep us posted,

Zui,
Of the two choices you mentioned if both are in the same condition(new/same age and keep), then I would recommend the Yamaha. I would agree with Rich, and PM on trying to stay with a larger size and solid soundboard. Laminated boards just don't have the accoustic properties a solid board will have. Young Chang makes some excellent pianos in the 5' range you might want to look at, as well as Hailun, Suzuki, and others. Yamaha will normally cost more than these other brands. Reasoning for it will range from brand recognition, quality, and reputation to a whole host of other reasons. The main thing is to shop as much as possible, gather as much information as possible, and don't be afraid to ask as many questions as it takes.

Good Luck!
