I can't imagine that piano sounding like that in a room... sounds more like a concert hall. I think they recorded the audio and video in two seperate sessions.

That is correct. I recorded the audio separately from the video. It took me over 6 hours to do the audio and video recording plus another 5 hours to edit & 1.5 hrs to compile.

We have a fairly large room about 3,000 sq. ft. with a hardwood Brazilian Cherry floor. I recorded the audio track using a high-end Sony triple element stereo condenser microphone.

What kind of customers buy electronics pianos?
Given my background of classical music training I am puzzled as to the benefit of adding electronic player to a beautiful instrument like Kawai Shigeru.

If you want to listen to beautiful music but you can't play it yourself, wouldn't a nice audio system do the trick?

If you spend the money for a beauty like Shigeru, wouldn't you want to play it yourself?

There's a big difference between a recording and a live performance, not only in the sound but in the addition of the fascinating visual element of watching a player piano perform.

I own a Schimmel grand which I enjoy playing very much. But I am not a professional musician, and I fully realize that other pianists could play this piano much better than I ever will. An accurate reproducing system would allow me to enjoy performances by these more capable pianists on the same piano that I play myself.

I often play pieces by ear (non-classical music, anyway), and I've found that watching another pianist's performance enhances my ability to mentally reverse-engineer the music over what I could get out of just an audio recording.

Although electronics have been involved in the reproduction process, here you can - beside the piano - enjoy the real aucoustic piano sound.

Only the tweeking of the piano stool and hte breathing of the pianist will not be reproduced.

It a marwellous product! But we still need pianists to make the recordings, and it is perhaps booring to listen to the abslolute identical performance from time to time. There is also no interaction between performer and listener, so in this respect the situation is completely unromantic.

In the Pianola Museum here in town they have some old models that allow you to add expressivity to the playback through either a crank or foot pedals. Quite the place to experience if you are visiting Amsterdam.

Almost all old players had regulators so the roll would play at a constant speed, and pumping faster or slower would make the piano play louder or softer. There were usually levers to make the bass or treble softer, as well. These days, few of them play well enough for the effect to be noticeable.

Perhaps its just my ignorance in electronics piano. When I see a self-playing piano in the mall I usually hear cheesy holiday music going over and over again, and all I wanted to do is run from it. \:D

It's true that solenoid player systems have got a bad reputation from all the exposure in hotels, restaurants and shopping malls that are too cheap to hire live musicians. The cheapest player systems don't perform very well, especially in unmaintained pianos with their volume levels turned all the way down by staff who are sick of hearing them. There is also a lot of cheesy, poorly-done content out there.

Watch Grand Piano Haus' video (higher quality versions can be found at the bottom of this page ) and you'll see what is possible with a state-of-the-art player system installed into a fine piano playing a well-mastered recording at a proper volume level.

Please don't discount this creation before you've seen it.....the sound and nuance of touch is like nothing else available....
You need to actually see and hear this thing....
All comments are valid but please use some context so that others can be better informed....just a thought...
