Palindrome's beautiful Bechstein in the Vertical Owner's thread led me to notice this piano.

Has anyone heard of a Berger? It "needs work to restore to playability"

Most likely strait strung and having an action not worth working on. What is referred to as a birdcage action.

Olde English birdcage action upright. Dime a dozen. Found in every antique shop. Nearly unserviceable to use as a modern musical instrument. Little or no musical instrument value. Value as an antique is whatever they can gouge their customers for.

You got that right, and then it still won't be terribly special. I'd look further for an instrument. This one no longer qualifies.

My upright is about the same vintage and it does not have birdcage action. A person would have to look inside to be sure, since it was made during a transitional period in design.

Hey, if it was closer to me, I would have taken the freebie, throw the innards out, and put a digital piano in that beautiful case.

I know it would be expensive, but couldn't a tier 1 upright innerds replace the worn out trash inside?

Thanks everyone, Rod and Craigen are right on the mark.

Here is the information from the owner in e-mail today:
"The serial # is A 32044. Below that is another # 13772. I have no idea how old, it could be from Germany. It looks like a Bechstein. Everything is in order, it doesn't look broken. Just a lot of sticking notes, and way out of tune. It is the birdcage style. I have no idea what it would take to rehab her to glory."

I like doremi's idea for putting my Casio PX200 in it but I don't have room for it.

I do have a wonderful Charles Walter traditional console in mahogany, it is just some day dreaming.
