I've been having a problem with my piano for about 3 months. It's so subtle, that when the tech came to look at it, he couldn't determine anything was wrong--but I promise I'm not crazy. At that time I wasn't able to really define the problem. Now I can (sort of). It seems that sometimes after I hit a key, it will repeat again in a sort of bounce. The repeat movement of the key doesn't go down very far, just barely enough to hear and feel. I doubt that anyone listening would hear it, but I do! It seems to happen on some keys more than others, but not every time on any key. Does anyone have any ideas what might cause this? By the way, it's a Petrof IV that's about 2-1/2 years old and I like it very much. I play it a minimum of 2 hours most days, sometimes up to 4 hours/day.

If it is just the key, not so much the hammer, it could be that the damper stop rail is too high. Press the key, hold it down, and lift the damper gently. If it lifts more than about 1/16 inch, have your tech check it.

The tech did check the damper stop rail. It may be that my problem is the hammers, I just don't know enough to know.

Find a good tech to regulate the piano. You should do at least a partial reg every year, given the use your piano gets.

Bob, what exactly should we ask our techs to do as regular yearly maintenance? I had my piano regulated last summer; do I just say "do whatever is needed" or is there a more specific list of things I could ask to be done that would make it sound like I knew what I was talking about? In other words, what does a "partial regulation" entail?

The tech I use does do partial regulations; he tends to do some work on the piano along with tuning 1-2 times per year. He says the regulation is good, so that's not the problem.

Any other ideas?

When you say your tech inspected the piano, and probably even played it briefly, but was unable to determine if anything was wrong . . . I presume you were able to describe for him what he was supposed to hear or feel -- but he couldn't?

At least a year ago, a person posted on this forum about a "buzz." No one else could hear the buzz, not even professional technicians. The person was very upset about it.

In that particular instance, reading that posting very carefully, most readers would have to wonder if there really was a buzz at all.

In your instance, are the keys malfunctioning? If another technician comes out, and is unable to detect any problem, you may have to question your judgment on this one.

I wish you well --

Glyptodont: When the tech came, I really couldn't describe the problem. Now I can, so when he comes again I'll ask him about it. I also thought of having someone else, and figuring that if he/she didn't know what I was talking about, it can't be anything much. In my small town, I'm not sure there is anyone else reliable though, and also I'd feel very bad if the current technician ever found out I had tried someone else.

I think that it IS a regulation problem. Post your situation in the Piano Technicians Forum.

They will undoubtedly have suggestions!

The tech came and fixed the problem. He said the drop screws were too high, and also the repetition levers needed adjustment. Anyway, it's fine now. He charged me $90.00 for the work, which I'm sure was fair (to me, at least).
