Thanks for the posting. I definitely do not want to join the funny piano owners club. Wierd that a few of my friends do have white pianos and I used to think white might be as normal as black since I know nothing about the pianos. Guess I learned a good lesson and it is not too late for me......I am really grateful for the existence of this piano forum.
btw, I somehow think blue piano looks quite cool although I would never get one for my house.

[/b] I rather wonder how much of the prejudice against white pianos comes from hanging around people who think that pianos ought to be black or wood-grained. *ponders* When I first considered getting a piano, leynode, as a total newbie who'd never had lessons, I thought it might be nice to have a white one. After all, I have a white car and like it just fine. But when you posted in your other thread about buying a white piano, I immediately thought, "Oh, no, not a white piano!" like it was simple wrong. Nothing has changed but my taste in the matter. So, I ask myself, really, why do we react like this to white — or colorful — pianos?? Of course, I don't ask myself what's wrong with the silvery horror that pianojerome is showing us. That is all too obvious.

There's a picture of a bright yellow upright "somewhere", I'll try to hunt it up if someone else doesn't get to it first. Monica - you really *should* buy that mermaid grand, it's obvious to all of us that you love it! That purple Yammie is "really there". Wonder what it'd look like under black light?

Oh, well. To each, his — or her — own. At least we won't be fighting over the thing.

Leynode, I don't think white comes anywhere near these other weird colors and wasn't trying to equate white with purple. My thinking is, prolly like most peoples that the ranking of 'normalness' is something like this:
black woodgrains white everything else
the white isn't far off the beaten path at all compared to some of these turkeys. :0
i considered one but the wife nixed it. heck, Elton used to (or still does) have a white one in his house.. i still prefer black though...

Why black?
How/when did this tradition get started? Why is it so hard for people to break from this particular tradition?
Is white only moderately acceptable because some big names used white pianos, and who are we to disagree with them?
Why are purple and blue and yellow and red and green and silver "weird" colors for a piano?
Why don't we see many concert halls with art case pianos, such as the "Summertime" Steinway piano that I posted before?
Just curious.

[/b] My list is almost, but not quite, backwards: Wood grains White Black Everything else. But I'll put most "art case" pianos at the very top of the list! And it also depends on the piano. Black grands don't look bad at all, but there's nothing more hideous than a black upright unless its a black "continental style" upright. Don't really care for white uprights either... But we all know I'm weird!

The second one is a real beauty! The first is OK in its setting...

My piano looks a lot like the red upright that kenny posted.
I want to get a new piano, so I might get a plastic one.

I love the art case piano Pandora posted ... Yes, really. Doesn't go with a thing in my house, but nice. The one I totally dig, though, is that awesome blue space-age instrument that Kenny posted. Doesn't go with a thing in my moon base hut, but I want it anyway.

I'd like just about any color, in the right setting. The only thing that would be intolerable to me... Beige.

Continuing with the recent fad of selling red coloured items with proceedes going to charity, Yamaha and Sir Elton John have put out... The Red Piano - http://www.yamaha.com/red_piano/ And, it actually, might, sort of, look, good? Well, at least part of the proceedes go to a very good cause!

A local club has a Mason & Hamlin BB with an art case very similar to the one Pandora posted. It was made in the 1930's which is rather late for an art case piano.
