I got it for $13.8K. It seems that the Petrof has the right combination of affordable price, solid action and great tone (comparable to a Schimmel or Bosendorfer.) I tend to play with heavy fingers, and the Petrof seemed to be a perfect fit for my playing style. I am also an extensive traveler to eastern Europe, and perhaps I have some subtle subconscious leanings to pianos made there.

The only other piano I have played that interested me as much (in this price range) was the Kawai RX line (1 or 2), but the Petrof seemed to have a richer timbre (although the Kawai did seem to be able to be played a little faster - faster than my fingers could play in any case.)

And the price seemed to me to be great deal. I can't think of another grand piano that would be as good for $14K. It seemed that *maybe* I could get a Kawai RW-1 for this price. I did find the top level Schimmel upright to be about as good, but it's an upright. I found the Schimmel grand to have an even richer tone, but at almost twice the price. The Estonia also had a good tone, but it was not as "punchy".

I also considered the Petrof III, but that piano was far too powerful and boomy for a parlor setting. I found the Petrof V to be very good as well, but that the bass was a bit more limited than I would have liked (and actually, the only dealer where I had found such a Petrof V wanted $17.5 for it!)

Where did you find a PIV for that price? Tell me it is a pre-owned piano! If not, I'll take another one!

Congratulations. That sounds like an outstanding deal for you. Like you, I really liked the Petrof actions in particular. When will it be delivered?

It was new from BHA in Dayton, OH. It will be delivered when I get my new home completed enough to move the piano in. I suspect that it will be in October.

I played your Petrof! Liked it very much. Went to the same shop about a month ago and bought a Petrof V with a Petrof/Renner action for $10,400. A great combination of quality and a price that I could afford. I love my new piano.

Shoshana, did you notice the sticking keys? The bar in front was causing the keys to stick. I had the bar taken off and there was no problems, so I determined that it was a trivial fix.

Yes, actually I did notice the sticking keys. That's the reason I didn't buy it. I learned later from my tech that this is an easy fix. You were smart not to be deterred.

I know you will have many years of enjoyment! And the price was fantastic.

Congratulations - great piano, from one Petrof owner to another (PIII). You can't beat the value.

Congratulations, swampwiz! I tried a PIII some two weeks ago and although it was badly out of tune it sounded like it could be a very nice piano at an almost unbeatable price. And at the price tag you've got it, it simply has to claim the famous "best bang for the buck" title!

So, double congrats! But where are the pictures???

Hi Swampwiz.
That is an incredible deal on your Petrof IV!! Sounds like there are a few of us that would have wanted in on a deal like that. Good luck on the house-building. It might be a good idea to have carpet in your piano parlor. I have my P IV over hardwood, and when I start doing some heavy playing, I might as well be at a rock concert (I'm thinking of throwing in an area rug underneath it).

Shoshana, my piano does not have the magnetic action. Does yours?

It seems from reading the literature that the magnetic action can be added at any time. I am bit of a traditionalist, so I think that I would not be interested in it in any case.

Hi Swampwiz,

Mine does not have the magnetic action--sounds kind of interesting, though. Mine has the Petrof/Renner action.
I was reading the Larry Fine book and learned that Petrof no longer uses Renner actions--they have designed their own new actions. I wondered if you have the new action.

Do you know when your piano was built? I never really asked about mine--I was just so thrilled to have it.

Congratulations on your Petrof IV!!! Petrof manufactures a wonderful piano. I don't know how you can stand to wait a full year for delivery. I was so excited when I purchased my Petrof IV that I was on pins and needles until it was delivered just a few days after purchase. Pat yourself on the back; because you purchased a first rate piano at an incredible price! Happy playing for many years to come.
