Hi, just looked at a Young Chang G157 Baby grand for my daughter. It had a red sticker with the numbers G-005099. I am assuming that is the serial number. It was the only other numbers I could find. Any idea how old it is? Any problems to be aware of? Thanks

1982....Have a technician look at it before you think about buying. No real problems for that year model that I know of.

YOUNG CHANG PIANOS HAVE NOT BEEN AROUND LONG ENOUGH TO
IDENTIFY PROBLEMS CAUSED BY AGE,WEAR,POOR CLIMATE
CONTROL Ect. NOT TO MENTION POOR MATERIALS WHICH
WEAR OUT MUCH MORE QUICKLY THAN EUROPEAN OR
AMERICAN MATERIALS.BEFORE YOU INVEST IN AN ASIAN
PIANO,YOU WOULD DO WELL TO COMPARE IT TO A WEST
EUROPEAN OR AN AMERICAN PIANO AS THE TONE WILL BE
BETTER IN MOST CASES AND IT WILL LAST LONGER
WITHOUT EXPENSIVE OVERHAULS EVERY FEW YEARS.

I own a Young Chang G157 from the early 1980's as well. I am selling it soon.
I always hated it until a master technician spent 6 hours doing good things.
Now I barely want to even sell it!

Alot of my hammershanks are warped but that's easy enough to fix. It's actually quite a cute little piano.
The action needed lubrication badly but after it was lubed it feels very nice to play.

Slone,
Caps lock off. You are shouting.
It will be difficult for the poster to find American or Western European grands from 1982 or newer at price points equal to that of this YC.
Korean pianos have been around long enough to make judgements on durability. Early 80's YC's are pretty predictable. One issue with new Young Chang's will be the new ownership's attention to quality vs. expediency.

YOU STARTED OFF BY SPELLING MY NAME WRONGLY WITHOUT
THE MISTER (I DON'T KNOW ANY WOMEN CALLED JIM )
I HAVE BEEN ACCUSED OF SHOUTING OVER TELEPHONES,
MICROPHONES,AND VERBALLY,BUT NEVER ON A COMPUTER
SCREEN. NO ONE IN EUROPE COMPLAINS AND POEPLE WITH
POOR EYESIGHT ARE THANKFULL !
HAVING MY WORKSHOPS IN MUNICH AND VIENNA I DEAL
WITH VERY FEW (AS FEW AS POSSIBLE) ASIAN PIANOS
WHICH ARE NOT VERY GOOD EVEN AT THE PRICE BUT
WHEN THEY HAVE BOUGHT ALL OUR FORESTS THEY MAY
GET BETTER BUT I DOUBT IFF PLASTIC AND ALLUMINIUM
PARTS WILL STOP BEING USED. MANY GREAT PIANOS I
WORK ON ARE AT THE BEST AFTER 50 (THAT'S FIFTY)
YEARS SO AS FAR AS ASIAN PIANOS GO,ONLY TIME WILL
TELL.BY THEN ALL PIANOS WILL SOUND ALIKE ANYWAY !
THE GUITARS ARE VERY GOOD (I OWN CHINESE,KOREAN,
GERMAN,AND AMERICAN GUITARS SO I AM IN NO WAY
BIASED BUT WITH PIANOS I'LL STICK TO GERMAN AND
AUSTRIAN)

Jim,

A new 5'3" Korean-made grand sells for about $10,000.

What will that buy me in a new German- or Austrian-made piano?

A 1982 G157 would sell for about $5000. What will $5000 buy in a 1980's German- or Austrian-made piano?

Dear Mr.Cohen.
THANKS FOR YOUR QUESTION.
I CAN'T HELP THE STATE OF YOUR ECONOMY AND THE EURO
IS DOING VERY WELL THANK YOU ! YOU WON'T GET A VERY
GOOD AUSTRO-GERMAN PIANO FOR FIVE GRAND BUT THERE
ARE A LOT OF GOOD USED ONES STILL AROUND FOR 5000
euros
MOST GOOD EUROPEAN PIANOS ARE EITHER OWNED OR
MADE ENTIRELY OR PARTLY IN CHEAP LABOUR COUNTRIES
LOW COST PRODUCTION LEADS TO STANDARDISED QUALITY
WHICH WILL EVENTUALY FLOOD THE WORLD WITH BORING
INSTRUMENTS AND EVEN MORE BORING PIANISTS !
I HAVE LEARNED AND WORKED IN AUSTRIA AND GERMANY
FOR ALMOST 30yrs.AND HAVE NO INTENTION OF TRADING
IN MY OLD MERCEDES FOR A TOYOTA OR WHATEVER TO
CONTRIBUTE TO THE ABSURD CONCEPT OF 'GLOBALISATION'AMERICA HAS(OR HAD) A FINE
TRADITION OF PIANO BUILDING AND PRODUCED SOME
GREAT INSTRUMENTS MANY OF WHICH WILL ,LIKE CARS
AND OTHER PRODUCTS BE MADE IN MEXICO,ASIA,OR
ANYWHERE WHERE THE PROBLEM IS NOT UNDEREMPLOYMENT
BUT OVERPOPULATION !I DO NOT SELL PIANOS,I REPAIR
AND RE-CONDITION THEM AT REASONABLE PRICES FOR
USE BY A SMALL CHILD FROM A NOT VERY WEALTHY
FAMILY TO CONCERT PIANISTS WHO REQUIRE A PIANO
TO SUIT HIS/HER NEEDS !
I DON'T AGREE WITH MUCH THAT I READ IN THE PTG
JOURNAL AND CANCELLED MY SUBSCRIPTION YEARS AGO
AND IFF I HAVE TO USE A SILLY NAME AND PHOTO
EVERY TIME I POST A COMMENT OR ASK A QUESTION,
THEN IT'S NO BETTER THAN MYSPACE IS IT ?
BEST WISHES
