I just discovered a few days ago that my Mark III - DC7, which no longer have warranty on the electronics, have a solenoid that doesn't move as well as the other keys. When the disklavier unit plays back, the note "A" above middle C, does not depress fully, unless it's playing loudly. When you have music that plays at "regular" comfortable volume, it only moves a little, but not enough to make a sound, resulting in a very annoying skip on the music.

When I transpose to other keys, the piece that used to play that note plays it ok on the transposed key. This tells me that it's not the piece.

I was told by a non-Yamaha technician that he thinks the particular note in question needs to have the solenoid calibrated, increasing the wattage for that note. But he is not sure, and don't know how to fix it.

I hope that this is easily fixable. Do you know if this is a minor problem?

What would it take besides calling a Yamaha technician to come in? Am I able to set the control unit to identify the problem and reset it?

If I do have to bring in a Yamaha tech, how much will it cost?

Are all Yamaha techs familiar with the Disklavier units, or are there only select people that has to be trained by Yamaha? How will I know?

The unit is only 4 years old.

I am not intimately familiar with Disklavier repair, however, every other system that I AM familiar with could easily have the offending solenoid replaced, or adjusted.

I don't see why it should be lots of $$$.

Not all Yamaha techs are certified for working on Disklaviers. I suggest you call the local chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild to find out who is certified in your area or call Yamaha directly. You do not want someone hacking around guessing what the repair is. I have only had a short course on Disklavier and need to return for certification which is about a full week of intense training. Ask to see the techs certification before they touch the system. I'm not sure what the cost will be but you are dealing with mechanical and electronic components plus diagnostic skills. It could be expensive.

If the problem is a burned out solenoid (from the description this is most likely) it should not be expensive. That takes little diagnostic skill, IMHO.

If it is something else...well.......who knows?

On my brand new C3 Mark III when I play most all midi music I have to increase the volume just to make sure all notes are played? If I turn the volume down to medium or below notes are skipped.

Is this normal? It seems odd to me.

I know there is a Disklavier calibration process, but the tech mentioned that he would do that at the six month mark.

The Yamaha Disklavier models all have a "self-diagnosis and a correction program" built-in to the computer. When an authorized Yamaha technician comes to tune your piano, this is the person who should run the program. The diagnostic portion measures the voltage of each key individually and adjusts them so they will play evenly.

This is not an expensive proposition. It is purely part of the maintenance that is required to keep your Disklavier running and performing accurately. However, only an authorized Yamaha-trained piano technician should be called to perform this task. Plus, he or she is usually the only one who knows how to get into the program to run it.

Does the mark III have this feature? Just curious.

None of the player systems should do this. This is correctable - if Steve says you have that feature, don't fret. It will be easily correctable. We do this with PianoDisc all the time - your piano's action changes over the first couple years of play and the player system does not - hence...... the adjustments needed.

Disklavier is warrantied for 1 year labor, 5 years parts.

The quality of playback is also reliant on the regulation of the action. As PaulY states, their is a calibration program that allows the Disklavier to acclimate to the current state of the action. The MIII has this (as did the MII, and possibly the M1).

The preferable procedure in all of this is to regulate the action first, and then run the Disklavier diagnostics second.

If you have not had a piano technician out yet, that is step one. So far this sounds like if could just as easily be an issue with the piano.

If there is a problem with the Disklavier Solenoid, or anything else, you should hire a Disklavier trained tech to do that work.

If you don't have a dealer in the area that is able to help you with this,
I suggest getting a hold of Dave Durbin @ Yamaha: 714-522-9883. He is the Piano Service Specialist and should be able to connect you with a person in your area.

You can also try Pat Hudnal, the Customer Service Manager @ 714-522-9143.
