In 1936 Blüthner scored tremendous public interest when the famous airship Hindenburg crossed the Atlantic for the first time with a Blüthner grand on board. For reasons of weight this instrument was made of aluminum, the outside covered with parchment and it served for the first broadcast of a piano recital from the air.

According to the Wiki:

"During its first year of service, the airship had a special aluminium Blüthner grand piano placed on board in the music salon. It was the first piano ever placed in flight and helped host the first radio broadcast "air concert." The piano was removed after the first year to save weight."

So, obviously it wasn't lost in the accident. Does it still exist?

One Blüthner piano of particular interest was special lightweight instrument, made of aluminium for use on the Zeppelin LZ 129 Hindenburg. This was the first piano used in flight and it was used in an "air-concert" radio broadcast. It was removed in 1937 to save weight so it survived the Hindenburg's infamous crash, only to be destroyed by bombing during the Second World War.
