I thought this New York City conjunction of piano playing and real estate would be interesting to some of you. Sorry if someone else has posted it already.

For anyone who is interested,

if you have a long link it will make the page wide.

What you do is create a hyperlink to it.

Example:

CLICK THIS and it takes you to Frank's page on how to do exactly that.

The second line of the second bullet point is what I did.

My signature line is actually about 10 pages long. I am amazed that a piano website taught me about code.

Amaze your friends!

It's a very interesting article.

That's part of the reason why I've always owned in the country -- affordable single-family homes that you can fill with pianos and organs.

Wow! That's really expensive (but then again, most kids don't see much value in money ) But to be that close to the piano capital of the country, it must be expensive.

That is a problem. The only "performance" opportunities I have are church-related, and farmers are not all that sophisticated. You have a point.

Actually, I was shocked by how cheap it was. Apartments in Manhattan have gotten *insanely* expensive in recent years. A simple brownstone on the Upper West Side that cost $1 million ten years ago is about $5 million now. It's very difficult to get a two bedroom in any decent neighborhood for less than $1 million. A friend of mine paid $375k for a tiny 1 bedroom in a boring Upper West Side location about six years ago and just sold it for $800k, and it needed complete remodeling. This guy got a deal. I gotta believe there are some drawbacks to the location that weren't mentioned in the article.... Either that or this real estate slump is worse than I thought.

That said, I agree about getting out of the city. I lived in Manhattan for 17 years, and there is no amount of money you could pay me to move back (nor would I trade anything for the time I spent there).

J. Mark, for a one-bedroom in a full-service doorman building on Central Park South, it did seem on the low side, as hard as that may be to believe for people in other parts of the country. I looked at the listing and it said it's 800 sf, so not a bad size. And a place where you can practice the piano without the neighbors complaining! What could be better than that? (Can you tell I'm addicted to looking at NY real estate stuff?) smile

Yeah, I think the reality is that CPS is not the same as CPW or 5th Ave. It's great because it borders the Park and there are so many things in that area -- but there are some pretty ugly buildings on CPS, and a lot of it is post-War stuff.

Still a better location than any of the apartments I lived in over my years in NYC. And for a person who makes his living in music in NYC, hey, he done good!

I agree. I spent a year in Manhattan. It felt like it was the center of the Universe. But there was a tremendous amount of unpleasantness that I had to consciously suppress just to get through a day, and when I moved to Baltimore the next year, the contrast made Baltimore seem like heaven! (Baltimore!!) I've seen people dying on the sidewalks of New York. I don't think I want to live there again.

That's a nice story. And the previous owners: what a bonus! Good vibes. I'm going to see them this summer.
