Hello, I am new to the list. I am a senior in college and a year and a half ago I was diagnosed with focal dystonia. After a lot of therapy I am fortunately able to play again, but I still have a lot of pain when I BEGIN a piece. I have just started the Prelude in C sharp minor 0pus 2. no 3 by Rachmaninov and Aufschwung from Schumann's Phantasiestucke. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to either deal with the focal dysonia, or how to get less tension in the arms in these pieces.

Thanks

Focal dystonia ("musician's cramp") means loss of voluntary motor control over individual limbs. I've also heard it called "writer's cramp".

rachrach, you might want to investigate the Feldenkrais method; check out this web site... they mention focal dystonia in the 2nd paragraph on the left:

Feldenkrais

BTW, you don't need to go the the netherlands to get Feldenkrais, it's available in the US too.
