I was just wondering if any of you have tackled Chopin's Black Key Etude? My teacher recommended it to me to exercise my right hand a little more than it is used to (I like to play loud chord pieces like Rachmaninoff). I just wanted to know is it as difficult as it sounds or is the pattern rather repetative?
Thanks

I've played it. The pattern is extremely repetitive. It's a great wrist rotation study, though. I found it to be rather easy at a modest tempo and quite tricky fast.

That's one I play and enjoy quite often. I play it with pure finger strokes, the same as I do Winter Wind and most such things because I never knew any better. It's a result of having had no proper technical tuition and grinding away making my fingers strong over the years. I sound all right compared to some renditions I've heard though - at least it's crisp and clear that way.

I like to play it a tad more slowly than most people - not too slowly though - with plenty of variation in phrasing, dynamics and accents. Most pianists just seem to blast uniformly through it at ninety miles an hour. I'd rather have a computer version than that.

It's not as difficult as it sounds, but you may have problems if your black keys are slippery. Listen to the recording of Horowitz, which is not as fast as that of other pianists, but played with great effortlesness and musicality which is impressive.

well that's for...

An etude to ensure black key's playing...

To study, is better to make it as legato as possible.
To perform, i like it brillant, and full of color and fast without losing musicality...
