Moving an Upright?

Sorry if this has been covered before; however, I'm moving into a flat in London on the second floor. I need to get my upright (a Rippen) up the stairs. I do intend to get professional piano movers. However, my concern is that the piano may not fit up the staircase in its upright position - ie the length won't fit around the corner on the staircase. Is it feasible to turn it on its end to get it round the corner on the staircase, or will this cause a lot of damage?
It's not possible to raise it outside via the window as the window isn't big enough.
I'd appreciate any suggestions!

Moving upright pianos on their sides is done all the time. If everything is tight inside, there should be no problem. Explain the problems to the movers first. There may be other tight areas you have not considered.
