I don't think I've heard a more inspirational piece of music! The first movement is so heroic; the second has some of the most beautiful and delicate moments I've ever heard; the third is so much fun and full of energy; and well I don't have descriptors for the 4th and 5th ;\) , but they just bring the piece to a wonderful close.

It sounds incredibly tough to bring together musically, probably not the most pianistic of pieces out there, and I would guess it takes a lot of molding and effort to make it sound more than just notes.

The only recording of it I have so far is Grigory Sokolov's and it is wonderful. At times he has the most delicate of touches and at others you can feel the power and aggression behind his playing. Can anyone recommend some other recordings? What other pieces do you hold to be truly inspirational and/or motivational?

Sokolov is great. Rubinstein is pure gold too. Other favourites include Kempff and Solomon, and possibly Arrau.

Richter was made for this piece, but sadly never played it. His recordings of Sonatas 1 and 2 are incredible though.

Yeah, you need Rubenstein. I also like Grimaud (an older Decca release.)

Katchen and Hough are my current favorites.

Grimaud is great. Kissin is good, too, but I think Grimaud gets a better sound out of the instrument.
