Has anyone played this piece? I noticed in my edition that somewhere between the 2-4 bars, there is a section where the hand-spans looks impossible-- there is a tie where you have to hold one of the base notes and play some notes in the middle and upper parts of the keyboard. Any ideas on overcoming this. I can do C-D easy and C-E with some effort.

You mean the bass D at the beginning of the bars?
You just have to sustain it with the pedal forte ! (even over two bars, most of the time - you need a piano with a good sustain - or to play fast wink )

Hanz:

First of all, you are not meant to hold the Db with a finger while you play the rest of the LH figuration; no one has hands that big. You are to hold the low Db with the pedal. However, how to hold it through five bars without re-striking it and still keeping it sounding while you change the pedal for the RH phrases is the problem.

There are a couple of ways of doing this. First, you could use the sostenuto pedal for the low Db, but I don't think you have one on your Clavinova, do you? Even if you do/did have a sostenuto pedal, it's unlikely the Db will continue to sound for all five bars. Secondly you can do what I've heard some pianists do (well, I do it!) - fudge it, and gently repeat the Db. This gives the impression that the Db continues to sound - which it does - but also, if you do it right, does not give the impression that you have struck the Db again - which you have done. You need a good, sensitive piano to do this as well as pretty good control of your touch.

It is important, in the LH in bar 9, to hear the fall from the Db to the C, which becomes the dominant leading to the F chord in the next bar. So, at the beginning of bar 9 the Db has to be sounding; whether you do so by using the sostenuto or whether you re-strike the Db is the question.

Here is another tip for the opening of this Consolation. In bars 2 and 3, to keep the accompaniment soft and even, cross hands and strike the low Db with your RH; as a matter of fact, you could even do this in bar 1. This keeps your left hand calm and almost motionless in the F to F position, saving it from having to jump the interval between the Db and the F.

Does this help?

Regards,

BruceD

Thanks for the tips. The Clavinova I have does have these pedals:

Right - Damper pedal
Middle - Sostenuto
Left - Piano

I gave the sostenuto pedal a try.

Just one curious thought -- couldn't this have been better illustrated in the score by placing some peddaling marks, instead of a tie?
