I guess I can use this as my introduction.......

Hi, my name is Tedd and I have a piano problem...
It was given to me about 9 years ago when my neighbor moved. I started to tinker with it just after the first of the year. Now I am just about finished with the primer book. \:\)

I'm married with four kids running around the house. The two older ones are also learning to play. For some reason they prefer to work with me, so I am happy to have the time with them.

I love the that they name board decal says...
"Concert Grand" and in small print above it, it says UPRIGHT

Dude!! You are the one that has inspired me to recondition my H.P. Nelson. I love your web documentation of the process. I use it for reference.

Dance on!!!

Still on the search for our first (and hopefully last) piano.
This is as far as we've gotten.

The room is 11X13 and opens to a two story foyer where I am standing to take the picture.
Do we put the piano where the template is, or in the corner to the right with the top open to the foyer?
After looking through this thread the wife said we need to go back to the store and check out the Estonia's. Thinking about 5'10 - 6'1 is all that will work in that room.

I think we need a few pictures on the walls once the piano is in.

Hi Justification,

My recommendation based on what I see in the picture is for the left side of the piano to be along (but not quite parallel with) the wall where the painting is sitting with the lid opening toward the foyer. I think it would be better both acoustically and it will feel more comfortable playing if your back isn't too the door.

My $0.02, possibly worth less.

Or, you could have the left side of the piano along (but again not quite parallel with) the right hand wall. That way, you look over the piano into the room, and toward the foyer, as you play. And as with BB's suggestion, the sound comes out into the room.

Here are a couple pictures of mine. I know we are violating every rule, with it on an exterior wall, and worse, right next to the front door... but we're in temporary digs while we build a house further out west. Hopefully, we aren't incurring any irreparable harm.

This is my Kawai K-8. The tall case on the right contains all my music scores. The lighting on the keyboard looks uneven because I turned on some downlights to brighten up the shots.

Pictures: Here .
Password: digit

I located it for a while against the wall on the right. But it was way too loud and tonally unbalanced so I moved it back perpendicular to the wall, about halfway along one leg of an L-shaped space. The dining area is in the other leg of the L.

My flat isn't very large so the piano shares its space with a couple of bikes on a wall rack.

I've got to say, I LOVE this thread. When I need a pick-me-up I often turn to this thread. There was a thread that had pictures of everyone's music area too---the person who started it had a GREAT music room with stuff all over the piano --it was really cozy and had a great "where I work" feeling to it. Anyway, here's my baby...keep this thread going! You all have beautiful instruments!

Here's the piano I have now.....

It's old and worn out \:\( and I've outgrown it.

As you can see, the bass strings are way too short (and the bass/tenor break is too high (to me, having the bass/tenor break higher on a piano makes it sound smaller)) to produce a good tone. \:\(

Alas, I can't afford ANY new piano (even the Suzuki 43" console is several times over my cash I have saved), nor do I have room for a grand. (not even a Kimball LaPetite!) So, I guess I'm stuck, unless I can find a nearly free 48+-year-old Hamilton that hasn't been played much... (even though its bass tone wouldn't be as good)

I think I figured out how to post a pic.
This is a 98yr old chickering.
It was a gift to me, and has a family history dating possibly back to 1911.
sorry I haven't figured out how to resize it.

I'm reviving this topic because it's really great.
When I look at all these beautiful pianos (AND houses ), I remember why I wanted to start piano and my motivation comes back instantly.
For now I just have a digital but if I ever get to live in a house, I hope I'll be able to buy an acoustic upright.
Nothing is impossible

I hadn't seen this thread - very nice that it's being revived!

Here are two pics I took of our 1890s Bechstein, custom made for Russia would you believe...
The legs are beautiful, and the lyre is also very unusual - it's not symmetrical.
I took them when we were re-decorating our music room a few years back. With all the furnishings gone, the acoustics were amazing.
That box with fingers is a Welte-vorsetzer I restored. I like to hear Horowitz playing Figaro Fantasie.... :-D
