a wonderful work, and my favorite toccata. Gould has a great recording of it, he reigns himself in rather nicely. I think all the toccatas have a common performance problem, and that is, to keep the sense of freedom and fantasy while maintaining a coherent whole. To balance the textures of fantasy, fugue, recitative, etc. whie not losing focus is the challenge, I think.

I love Hewitt's recording. It's definately my favorite of the Bach Toccatas.

I've heard several, but my favorite by far is Martha Argerich's recording.

I've played it. It's really wonderful. Fugue is awfully long.
