It must be the poet in me ... trying always to reduce two words into one ... this reverie fastened onto NATIONAL MUSIC and out came the following

FRANCE ... flair ... (Berlioz, Debussy, SaintSaens, Bizet, Ravel)
GERMANY ... order ,,, (Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Mendelssohn)
ENGLAND ... pride ... (Elgar, Holst, Vaughan Williams, Coates, Walton)
RUSSIA ... folklore ... (Tschaikowsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Moussorgsky)
ITALY ... voice ... (Verdi, Rossini, Scarlatti, Vivaldi)
AMERICA ... bounce ... (Joplin, Gershwin, Tin Pan Alley, MacDowell)

What are your thoughts on a single word to describe a national music ... and the composers who come to mind?

I always liked this fairly accurate saying regarding baroque music:

The French dance to it, the Germans think about it, the Italians sing to it, and the English pay for it.

Many thanks to Ragnhild, Piano-Dad, jazzyprof and ChatNoir for adding to the NATIONAL bounty ... Ragnhild has kindly added “nature” to her first thought of NORDIC music ... are Piano-Dad and Jazzyprof able to add a succinct word to describe ARGENTINA , AUSTRIA and SPAIN
respectively.

FRANCE ... flair ... (Berlioz, Debussy, SaintSaens, Bizet, Ravel)
GERMANY ... order ,,, (Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Mendelssohn)
ENGLAND ... pride ... (Elgar, Holst, Vaughan Williams, Coates, Walton)
RUSSIA ... folklore ... (Tschaikowsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Moussorgsky)

AMERICA ... bounce ... (Joplin, Gershwin, Tin Pan Alley, MacDowell)

AUSTRIA...waltz...(J. Strauss, J. Strauss Jr.)

SPAIN...guitar...(Albeniz, Rodrigo, de Falla, Romero)

And thanks to Kriesler for the waggish baroque quote ... but without asking the Texan to explain his jokes ... I get the French dancing (flair), German thinking (order) and Italian singing (voice) ... but can’t put a handle on the English “paying”.

Maybe it’s my typical English stuffy insular pride ... the effect no doubt of the guarding North Sea Channel ... but then it was Napoleon whose ambitions were balked by the 21 miles of choppy sea ... called the English a nation of shopkeepers ... needed a Marlborough don’t you know ... to put the Emperor chappie in his place ... believe it was Waterloo.

Somebody needs another cup of morning coffee.

Sums up the Baroque nicely. The Beecham quote succinctly gets to the root of the 'pay'.

.. it seems to me that the inherent nature [of the piano tone] becomes really expressive only by means of the present tendency to use the piano as a percussion instrument - Béla Bartók, early 1927.
