Now, I know he isn't a pianist, but recently "60 Minutes" interviewed this conductor.

http://60minutes.yahoo.com/segment/143/gustavo_dudamel?view_results=1#poll

I really enjoyed the interview clips, but what I found most interesting was the poll that Yahoo asked, "Does Watching Dudamel Make You More Interested In Classical Music?" 84 percent of those surveyed said yes.

You guys think Dudamel has a chance at making classical music popular again?

I seriously doubt classical music will ever be "popular" again (in the sense of reaching a Britney Spears level of popularity, etc.). I haven't listened to him, but the way he was promoted early on was rather silly. The fact that he was chosen to lead the L.A. Philharmonic after Salonen's departure probably says that he's at least extremely capable (though I wonder if he will promote modern/contemporary works the way Salonen did, without limiting himself to modern/contemporary South American repertoire, which I personally do not fancy with the big exception of Ginastera). In any case, here are some sample reviews of some of his recordings:

Beethoven Fifth and Seventh
Bartok Concerto for Orchestra
Mahler Fifth

After attending a Hollywood Bowl classical concert attended by 20.000 people, I have to ask the question: How can you say that classical music is not popular?

I really find it difficult to understand all the frenzy about Dudamel.
He is probably the most overestimated conductor of the last 50 years. He is still very young. Just give him time to mature...

I saw him a few weeks ago and he was Ab Fab...he will be here towards the end of March and I would invite you-all out but he has been sold out for months. He will do Firebird and Rocky 1 for starters...

Even the so-called "open rehearsal" is sold out...

I wish he was my kid...
