Thanks Brendan for starting this thread \:\) My plan is to attend the Preliminaries on the first weekend (one block on Friday, both blocks on Saturday, one block on Sunday). I have already purchased airplane tickets and a hotel reservation. I'm still waiting for confirmation on seating at Bass Hall \:\)

I'm looking forward to this! Only once in every four years!

Hey Brendan,Mikester...

It would be a nice if you guys could give us immediate feedback on the days the results are announced for who passes up to each round - so we would be as up to date as if we were actually there. I'm assuming you're going to have access to internet whever you're staying??

haha....who it's rigged for....I'd say either Ning
An or Koltakov this year.

Is there an age limit to this type of thing? I think it'll be nice to enter next year...but I'll be 14 then, is that old enough?

Ummmm... If they let you enter, you'd be in for some real competition... I say stick with high school competitions for now.

Hey guys, sounds great. Is there going to be a live video webcam feed like there was at the 7th List Competition in Netherlands last week?
If so, please post link so we can all watch it.
It's a long way from London and I'd love to watch it. \:\)

SteveT, yes.

Riyoku, wish you the best auditioning for the Cliburn. Though, the next one is not for another four years, so you'd be 17 years of age. If you are a gifted prodigy, the whole world should hear you.

Hey something just occurred to me:
Why is Van Cliburn himself so uninvolved in his own competition??

I mean, he's still alive and healthy, right?
Don't you think he should at least do SOMETHING to support his competition like
give a speech or play a commencing recital?

For some teenagers who have a passion for music practice 8 hrs a day is their life. To some it is a satisfying one!

That would be fun, but I'd have a stupid career.

me, bitter? what do you mean? i am being realistic! it's getting worse & worse for every instrument. if you really expect to have a professional career as a soloist, piano or violin, expect to start at age 3 to 6, have the best teachers, lots of money, attend Curtis, Julliard, etc., play top instruments and of course I suppose you need some talent. are you going to dispute that? (read the biographies of people who are making it today.. oh, I forgot.. if you aren't "HOT", esp. females, forgetabout it!)

If you started at four, didn't have a teacher for...six years or so, does that count as started at 4?

The Masterclass with Ungar/Mozart should be especially enjoyable. He's very good from what I hear, and at the last Cliburn he had either 3 or 4 students compete, which was the most for anyone. He specializes in the Viennese classics too I believe, so better prepare it well. \:\)

I met with him when I was looking for someone to work with, but decided on another professor (Harold Martina) because he had a pretty hectic schedule.

The Dallas/Forth Worth Star Telegram has started to post questionaires for all 35 competitors. Each questionaire also includes a picture of the competitor.

By Jennifer Autrey
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

12th in a series of 35

(pronounced Dee Woo)

Born: Nanjing, China

Lives: Philadelphia, Pa. (she attends the Curtis Institute of Music)

Age: 20

Marital status: Single

When she thinks of China: She misses her family and the food, particularly spicy dishes, Peking duck and seafood, "because my hometown is on the coast."

Favorite CDs to listen to with friends: Everything from the Beatles and Elvis to Avril Lavigne and Christina Aguilera to Charlie Parker and Oscar Peterson.

Favorite indulgence: Chocolate eclairs.

When she's away from the piano: She surfs the Net, hangs out with friends or watches sports, though her fave switched from soccer to tennis when she moved to the United States.

Life-changing decision: When she was only 12, she made up her mind that she would become a professional pianist. "When I was accepted into the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China, my father asked me if I want to become a pro (because I was very good in academic studies, too). He wanted me to make this decision on my own rather than them making it for me, and he asked me three times after I was accepted. I said I wanted to become a pro every time."

Pre-concert ritual: "The thing that I have to do before any kind of performances is to sleep a lot on that day, and that's about it."

Cliburn dreams: "I remember in the last Cliburn competition, I was tracking down the competition on the Internet every day, listening to every broadcast performance, and thinking how unbelievable all the players were. It's absolutely thrilling to actually be chosen as one of the finalists."

Regarding Van Cliburn's involvement: Let's see... he started the blinkin' thing.. and I believe that he has underwritten a huge amount of the financial end of the competition, and I believe he also donates vasts amounts of money to TCU (which hosts the competition) (built the state of the art recital hall?). He attends the event and mingles with people, and presents the awards. What more do you want? Do you want the old guy to give a free recital during cocktail hour each evening? Oh, also I believe he sponsors "the Van Cliburn Series" at TCU as well each season and brings world-class performers to Dallas/Ft Worth. You can read all of this if you go to the website. All in all, Cliburn has done more for piano than probably any other performer alive today, wouldn't you say?
