As all we should know, JMC is only a program for kids in music appreciation, not really learning yet!
I don't know what the Yamaha school is teaching these days, but it was much more than you describe when I was a kid. I learned a lot.

For example, we had to sing everything we played on the keyboard. We also learned to sing rhythms. At three years old, that's a pretty great skill. Certainly came in handy when learning jazz!!!

We had a brief interview with a piano teacher today. She is a young teacher and has an infant to take care. She was looking at the clock when we were talking. I understand that she wants to go back to her little daughter. I would like to find a piano teacher who is willing to talk to me more than 15 minutes for an interview.

i think Yamaha schools might be really expensive, so no thanks, i'll settle for private lessons.

I was in a Yamaha school from age 5 until I was about 7. Then I got private lessons. The Yamaha school served its purpose, but I agree with Princessclara in that 7 is a good age to start branching out into the world of private lessons.

I have a number of friends who teach private piano lessons, and with kids this young they often turn into babysitting sessions or they spend most of the lesson trying to get the kid interested and paying attention. But LP, from what you say, your son doesn't seem to have a problem with attention span and interest, so going with private lessons might not be a bad idea. If he likes the private lessons, I agree with others that he'll probably learn things faster and better than with the group lessons. But if he misses being with other kids for the lessons or it otherwise doesn't work out, you can always go back to Yamaha until he's ready for private lessons, I would think. Either way, good luck!
