I came across this peice the other day and am considering learning it mainly because of how tense and "on edge" it makes you feel. It's quite a thrill! Is anyone familiar with this piece?

Yeah, that's my friend John's link of that Leo Ornstein piece. I do hope you are quite experienced before you take up this piece. It is not easy at all. Ornstein's more popular pieces include 'Danse Sauvage' as well as 'A la Chinoise' and they are both technically demanding to pull off at speed.

'Suicide in an Airplane' contains some pretty virtuoso music writing, especially regarding repeated-note technique. If you are equipped with the technique and you really want to learn..go right ahead. You'll make plenty of noise while practicing. xD

Here are the Ornstein pieces mentioned above:

Leo Ornstein : A la Chinoise

Leo Ornstein : Danse Sauvage

xD

Lol, how long did it take you to come up with that response? :p

Anyways, like I said in my comment on the YouTube link itself, I think that it would be absolutely fantastic as background music in a movie during an intense scene, like in a psychological thriller or something. But by itself it gets annoying fast, but that's just me of course. Thanks for sharing the link though! wink

I take it you don't like it, then.

I've read some of your posts on atonal music. You have an ungrounded antipathy toward the style. I think you should take it easy, or risk simply making a fool out of yourself.

No sir. I am a semi-educated musical half-wit, and I can tell you this is far beyond my capabilities (and yours I would imagine).

You just don't like the music.

Lol, unfortunately that's just too hard to admit for some people, they'd much rather insist that anything they don't like is actually rubbish and that there is no such thing as personal taste in this world.

Following Mocheol's example: I don't like seafood, therefor all seafood is rubbish, and the people who eat it are semi-educated culinary half-wits! Chicken4Life! mad

Kind of a depressing outlook if you ask me, seeing as I can just as easily say that I personally do not care for seafood, and then leave everyone else to enjoy their lobster in peace. laugh

Beauty is obviously in the ear of the beholder and I think this is a really impressive piece of musical onomatopoeia; the rumbling of the plane's engine is evoked most imaginatively.
There is..or used to be... a website where all of Ornstein's published piano music (and there's quite a lot...didn't he live 'til he was about 110?)is available. He wrote in quite a variety of styles and although he's not one of the world's greatest composers I guess even Mocheol might find something of Ornstein's which is to his taste and might cause him to reconsider his assessment of Ornstein's abilities.

It's all here:

http://leoornstein.net/

There's a lot at IMSLP, too, courtesy of his son, Severo, who owns the copyrights:

I love Leo Ornstein!

Oh, I don't know. It's at least as good as Flight of the Bumblebee.
