The New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) is pleased to announce the launch of its Young Artists Concerto Competition. Students are invited to apply in three categories, including pianists and harpists aged 9-13. All applicants must be Connecticut residents. Applications must be postmarked by October 10th, 2007 with the first round of auditions scheduled for November 3rd, 2007.
In addition to a cash prize, applicants will compete for the opportunity to perform as featured soloists with the NHSO in April 2008, as well as receive coaching sessions with NHSO Music Director William Boughton and Associate Conductor Gerald Steichen.
“The competition is a wonderful way for the NHSO to showcase the extraordinary talents of Connecticut’s gifted young musicians and provide a platform for them to inspire their peers.” NHSO Education Director, Steve Collins.
For complete competition guidelines and application form, please visit the NHSO website: newhavensymphony.org. For further information contact NHSO Education Director Steve Collins at (203) 865-0831 x13, scollins@newhavensymphony.org

I wish more orchestras in my area (Virginia) did this. It's a wonderful win-win strategy. For the students it is a fun motivator. For the community, it demonstrates a partnership with the orchestra and it helps showcase young talent. And lastly, it demonstrates the continuing appeal of 'classical' music in an intergenerational manner.
