Prokofiev Piano Sonata No. 7, 2 (mov. 3/4 in this case), 4
I simply love the melancholy and nostalgic aspects of Prokofiev's slower movements. On the more stereotypical side of 2nd movements I would have to go for some Brahms:
Brahms Piano Sonata No. 3 Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1

Beethoven's "Pathetique" hands down if I had to ask myself.
I like about 2 minutes of the 2nd mvt of the Rach 3 (where it picks up in tempo through the end)...which is funny, because the concerto is in my top 3 all-time favorite concertos. It's actually among my least favorite 2nd movements just because of how damn long and less-than-interesting it is to me.
Same thing with Beethoven's "Tempest". Perhaps if it were a little closer to an Andante than an Adagio...but it just seems to drag in most of the recordings I hear.

Here are a couple good second movements:
Barber Violin Concerto Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 Brahms String Sextet in B flat Grieg Piano Concerto Poulenc Piano Concerto Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 2 (okay so I assume you mean the slow movement so this wouldn't count, in which case I would pick his 5th concerto, 4th movement) Prokofiev Piano Sonata No. 4 Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos 1-4 Ravel Piano Concerto Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2
I think my favorite is the Shostakovich.

Weird i agree with you about these , it is rare that someone here mentions this - all people like the 2nd mov. of the Rach2 but i always thought that the 1st mov. is far and far more superior - genius too if i might add and the tempest too although chris w won't agree

I thought the second movement of Rach 3 was more interesting than that of Rach 2 though. Though I have to say the section in the second movement of Rach 2 with the theme on the violins, through the end, is hauntingly beautiful. Put another way, I can listen to the second half of the movement over and over again, but I wouldn't be sure about the whole movement. By the way, my orchestra is playing Rach 2 in a week, and I'm in the violin section

"Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2
I think my favorite is the Shostakovich. "
Yeah, I love that second movement as well.
The 2nd movement of Saint Saens 2nd Piano Concerto is great, really fun to play. Theres a lovely bit where it turns to a minor key about halfway through.
The 2nd movement of Rachs 2nd Sonata is beautiful.

and the tempest too although chris w won't agree [/b]You know Rachmaninoff wrote the 2nd movement first, right? It was the "gem" that got him out of his depression.... *scoff* When the work was first performed, it was only two movements long...the 2nd and 3rd movements. It wasn't until later that he added the 1st movement (a wise decision, I should think), which is my favorite from that concerto (though it does wrestle with the 3rd movement a bit). And yeah, the Tempest drives me nuts...my teacher hates the way I play the 2nd movement. (I play the whole sonata in about 18:30-19:00, instead of the normal 21:30-23:00 just because of those certain "overly slow" facts.) But I can't stand it as slow as some people like to hear it. (It's weird...my teacher likes the blazing speed I put to the first movement, which is slightly faster than normal, but doesn't like the then-balanced slightly increased tempo of the 2nd movement. Oh, well...)

That's right...I have the same birthday as Mozart. If only it meant something and I could have one thousandth of his genius...in my dreams, i suppose.
