Hi,

I have a question. Starting with the basic assumption that bass clef is left hand and treble clef is right hand...and that left hand plays low note in bass clef then chord in bass clef; right hand plays melody in treble clef and then chord in treble clef (the chords in left hand and right hand at same time)...

now...if the chord, consisting of bass clef and treble clef notes, is only 3 notes that easily fit within the spread of one hand, is the intention for it to be played with two?

As the piece develops, of course, the chords become bigger and more complex, and there are not really options as to how to play all the notes.

So I guess my question would be...did the composer intend for the early (3 note) chords to be played with one hand or 2? If one, would he not have notated it as one chord in one clef, as opposed to notes spread over both clefs?

If it is intended to be played with both hands (as the notation would suggest), then do I just keep doing that until it is no longer possible and I need to spread my hands over all the notes however I can? help

(Piece in question is Cancion y Danza #1 by Federico Mompou)

Anton Rubinstein once said to Josef Hofmann, "Play it with your nose if you have to."

You seem to have a good finger distribution already going in that score.

Loki,

I started some fingering notation and then had the revelation that maybe I was heading down a path that was not what Mompou had intended...

but the consensus above seems to be "do whatever works"...so I am just doing what seems to make sense for me while trying to follow the composer's phrasing.

Boy, some of these Mompou pieces are so gorgeous, and not difficult. So fun to learn!
