Originally posted by Antonius Hamus: Gould, the great humanist (may he rest well), got Mozart a self-spinning grave, before em-barking on his Mozart sonata traversal. So it's no trouble, no trouble at all, he would say. No trouble for him, but it gave me some trouble. That said, his A minor sonata was -in some sense- a rather amazing performance. It was quite a new experience for me (the sonata too) hearing it as an impressionable youth. Then did Uchida subsequently sound a bit dull? Nah. One doesn't go from Seattle's grunge band Nirvana directly to Ella Fitzgerald without appropriate recovery time. Or is "re-entry" time?

I think it's recovery and discovery, and then re-entry. Gould is usually pretty good (even amazing) when his tempi aren't atrocious, which is rather rarely. Of course he also had too much fondness, all that highlighting, for the Alberti bass in Mozart's sonatas (and I suppose the bass in general, but I should listen to them aga---ah, nevermind).

I have no troubles at all with the Baroque, except for Bach who can get me in a snit. I could never memorize any of his works either because I was worrying about which finger did what, when, and where and I'd end up confused.
