My parents are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in June. I'm looking for piano pieces in both the classical and jazz genre that would be appropriate for performance at that occasion. My daughter is playing for them. Her teacher has suggested the Anniversary Waltz (who is the composer?) and Bach's Joy of my Soul (Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring) but I'm looking for others. Any suggestions?
The music is instrumental music for a reflection during a Catholic mass, and then dinner music afterwords.

For dinner afterwards, I would think quite a few of Chopin's Nocturne's would be nice. For an aniversary, I think #2 would be especially appropriate.

I don't think that the "Anniversary Waltz" would be appropriate to play during the Mass, but would certainly be so for the dinner afterwards.

For the dinner afterward, why don't you find out if the couple has any special "our songs" from the early years? That would be very special indeed! Or, altneratively, you could just pick some jazz and pop pieces from 1952 to set the mood.

Mike, thanks for the reference, and the congrats.

Bruce, The Anniversary Waltz was meant for the dinner and not for the mass, but I am still looking for a piece to be played as a reflection piece during the service. What I'm after most is something with a religious bent - but an instrumental piece - for the service. Apart from the Bach I already mentioned, I'm lost here, other than an instrumentalizing from the hymn book.

Penny, the idea of their favourites is being covered by a 10 piece swing band hired for the event. That should handle the nostalgic pop/swing/jazz aspect.

I like the idea of the Chopin Nocturnes for dinner, and am also considering pieces like Bach's Siciliano, perhaps a Brahm's Waltz (maybe Ab) and maybe Debussy. Also any thoughts on a nice jazz ballade or two? (Evans, Ellington and Peterson comes to mind).

Thanks all, & feel free to respond. All ideas are welcome.

I guess if you want to try instrumentalizing from the hymnal, you may want to try these following tunes as a prelude (maybe):

O Waly Waly
Sussex Carol

Some hymns appropriate for a marriage/anniversary theme were set to those tunes.

I used to have a book of songs and anthems appropriate for weddings/anniversaries but unfortunately, my copy is floating around in San Diego somewhere; there was plenty of really good stuff in this book.

If you want, (and once all the hullaballoo dies down from building projects and what-not) I could ask the music director at my church for suggestions.

Oi! How could I forget this one! This was a piece my friends and I swooned over when we were in junior high school. Lots of octaves, arpeggios and rolled chords, but a very beautiful piece nontheless. Not sure if it would be appropriate for a reflection piece in Mass, but if you get your hands on this one, you could make that decision for yourself.

This piece was composed by Louis A. Drumheller, and it's called "Love and Devotion (Meditation)", Op. 52

Hope this helps and good luck.

Lyn F.
