analysis of Messiaen's Vingt Regards!
Does one exist?
I found only one so far, and it was in Japanese. I guess my computer does not recognize the symbols and only blocks come up...non translatable. Anything I can do about that?

Messiaen did write notes for Vingt Regards, but I assume you mean an in-depth musical analysis rather than a programmatical analysis? You may wish to peruse this site, which has some excellent reference material: web page The site lists this work by Siglind Bruhn: Musikalische Symbolik in Olivier Messiaens Weihnachtsvignetten which should get you started.  That is, IF it is still available. How's your German?

There have to be many, many doctoral dissertations on this incredible work. UMI [university microfilms] at Michigan keeps some sort of searchable archive.

The thing that I've found resourceful is Peter Hill's analysis in his collection, "The Messiaen Companion." Unfortunately, it's not readily avilable. Amazon says it's out of print, but check with your city library or a nearby college one and they might be able to find a copy for you. Also: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/malball/messiaenbib.htm

Thanks a lot guys, I am in the midst of some research!
BTW, what do you think of Peter Hill's recordings?
I really enjoy his tempi, and his solid articulation. Still prefer the Aimards and have yet to hear the Osbourne. But I am really beginning to like Hill's interpretation.
