Hi,

I resently heard Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G minor. It quickly became one of my favorite pieces. However, after seeing the music for it, I was stunned. It has proven itself to be the hardest piece I've ever studied. I'm having some trouble, no doubt. Measure 23 is exceptionally challenging.

I would appreciate it if I can get a few tips or strategies. Thanks in advance.

There are several threads which discussed this before. Try out the search button and I'm sure there are countless posts of advice.

Things that come to mind..
Pay attention to pedaling in the middle section, and a lot to fingering. I had considerable trouble at first with the middle section because of my fingering. However, after making few adjustments, it came to be the most easiest part for me.

Also practice your eye-hand coordination by playing a lot of jumping chords. There are a lot in this piece.

Voyager III,

What is it about measure 23 that is causing you difficulty? If you can get through measures 17-22 I wonder what could be so difficult about 23!

The whole piece is challenging. Measures 17-22 are difficult, but slow practice takes them. In measure 23, I can't get the notes to come out the way they should be. When slowed down, it can be played with ease, however, it's not so easy when up to tempo.

I love this piece, but for some reason, I don't listen to it anymore.

I learned roughly 90% of it, then I got bored and lost all my motivation to learn it. But now I want to relearn it (after my competition)

For the most part, I probably just need A LOT more time. I really enjoy this piece, and would like to play it at a competition. However, if I'm going to get this ready by the competition, I won't have the kind of time I would like.
