I'll be spending my summer in Beijing, will rent a piano to practice in a fairly new apartment. So I'd like to know if practicing is allowed (or not prohibited) in a 32 floor apartment (newly built, have students, white-collar, family). I'll be living either somwhere at the middle or the 32nd floor. And if there is a standard practice time (like 10:00AM-10:00PM or 11:00-9:00). I certainly don't want to see cops showing up the first day I start to practice.

Also, does anyone know the cost for renting a descent upright piao in Bijing? I've heard that some vendors in China will try to raise price to foreigners thinking that foreigners usually don't know the price range.

Thanks a lot \:\)

you're so lucky. I get to travel to China on a semi-regular basis for work, but I don't often get time to explore. Being their for an extended period of time should be a lot of fun.

Hopefully someone will help you on the practise front - though given the density of accomodations you're not the first to deal with this.

One thought you might entertain is to rent a digital so you could practise any time.

Beijing is a great place - but with detailed regulations for almost everything - even exact times during which you may walk your dog in the morning and in the evening. Would be surprised if they didn't have any regulations for when and where you may play the piano.

I'd contact the Chinese consulate or Embassy to see if they have anything or can give you contact details for the Beijing municipality.

To be on the safe side and to allow you to practice at all times I'd rent a silent piano (or digital if you're not allowed to play at all in appartment buildings and if that were cheaper).

Forgive me, however, why would anyone want to do that? Spend the summer in a Chinese apartment playing a rented upright? Why not get a grand anyway if you're going to do that. Anyway the pianos are so cheap you could buy them, play them and turn them into matchwood at the end.

Because while upright *may* disturb neighbors, a grand piano will surely drive them crazy?

Acutually I just got a phone number off China's embassy's website, will call and see what's up.

I can't stand digitals. \:\(
