Would you care to explain? Why would Chopin "want" one to become "sloppy". What do you mean by "sloppy"?

Regards,

I didn't necessarly mean he "wants" you to become sloppy. I meant that, studying the pieces, the only way the most difficult parts sound good, are when they're very clean, but at the same time it's very easy to slip and mess up the whole passage. and I think he had something against certain people that he wants them to go mad or something. yet at the same time, he a genius, and I owe him alot... it's a love hate relationship right now...

I think I get it! \:D

You can certainly go mad trying to perfect certain passages....
but I don't think he meant for that to happen. It's just that it came so easily to him, and not for us mere mortals!

In all honesty, I think every piece played deserves perfection where hitting the notes are concerned? Otherwise it isn't ready to be interpreted.
All passages should be very clean.

How funny, really. Chopin as the devil. ;\) That's really a stretch of the imagination, but there is no doubt that some of his compositions are "devilishly" difficult.

I did read that he never composed one piece of music that he, himself, could not play. I've heard differently about other composers.

While it is true that Chopin's stamina was not the strongest, he proved that one doesn't have to be a weightlifter to play his music. What one has to be able to do is to be very flexible. Chopin's hands were average size, but he managed to play everything, precisely and cleanly.

As "hopinmad"'s closing quote states...it will all come in time if one is persistent, consistent, dedicated and patient. I guess it all depends on how badly we want to play some of his most difficult pieces.

All things are possible... \:\)

I heard a performance only last evening of the Chopin First Piano Concerto, played by Janina Fialkowska with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra conducted by its permanent conductor, Tania Miller.

This was not only a fine performance of the Chopin concerto, it was one of the finest Chopin performances I remember ever having heard. The performer's emphasis was not on virtuosity - although virtuosity occasionally showed up when needed - but rather on a lean, clean, lyricism (no "overly Romantic mush and goo!") and on "poetic expression," if dare I use that term in conjunction with lean and clean? All passage work was neat, tidy - but never showy - and always fit into the larger framework of the phrase beautifully. Her phrasing was absolutely exquisite, and perhaps I say that thinking that Fialkowska played Chopin last night the way I dream of playing Chopin had I that kind of technique at my disposal.

Chopin, in short, as Chopin should be played.

Regards,

25.9 is way too similar to Beethoven Sonata #25 3rd movement.
