You're 146 years old.

I'm picturing 10 horns standing up in unison at the back of the orchestra accompanying a 1000 person chorus in the loudest rendition of 'Happy Birthday' ever recorded.

Happy birthday Mahler!

His music has been some of the most inspirational in my life. He had a deep gift from God

Dear Mahler (as if he's listening  ),

Thanks for the Ninth Symphony. 3hearts Big lump in the throat, every time.

And the "Tenth". Ditto.

And the Eighth. Anyone attended a live performance? It left me wandering about in a daze for weeks! My old LPs of this are worn out...

And the Second. Ooh!

And Third. Aah!

And the First. Wow!

apple*, why the rolling eyes? Not yet discovered the genius that was/is Gustav? wink

My favourite is probably the Sixth. Last summer I was exceedingly privileged to see/hear Mariss Jansons conduct the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra performing Mahler's Sixth at the rather striking lakeside Konzertsaal in Luzern. Possibly one of the world's finest conductors/orchestras/symphonic works/concert halls all rolled into one...[1] and the restaurant there wasn't bad either!

- Michael B.
[1] Last spring I also attended the Royal Festival Hall in London for the Barenboim/Chicago SO touring performance of the 9th, which was also marvellous. The orchestra was outstanding, especially the brass/woodwind. They obviously don't call it the Windy City for nothing...

I used to heart Mahler when I was a dreamy college nut. I still do but don't have the time to sit through one of his so often now.

Happy birthday Mahler, although I haven't heard much music of you.

You're missing out. It's definitely some of the deepest music ever conceived by anyone.

It's not too much like Wagner, I hope? I don't like Wagner. But I do like Bruckner, so don't know about Mahler.

For a long time I couldn't sit through more than 5 minutes of Mahler. But then one day my friend played the 9th symphony for me...

So now I bought the complete symphonies conducted by Solti with the CSO and have listened to all of them (except 5 and 7, which I like a little less) gazillions of times.

And Das Knaben Wunderhorn... I sing along to it while I drive. wink :p

I had the priviledge to sing in the chorus of Mahler's 2nd symphony this past year in concert at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music. (As a pianist we are required to take 8 semesters of ensemble credit, so many people just sing in the chorus.) It was the last orchestra concert of the year. At one of the huge explosions towards the end of the 5th movement, we were all to stand up in unison. 2 minutes later we were singing the greatest climax in all of music. (I even screeched out a high G, which is tough for a bass.) As far as musical experiences go, I'll never be able to beat that one.

blaude, please tell me they used the new organ in the Finale movement?!

That would have been awesome!

But something tells me the new organ hall at Rice won't accomodate orchestra, choir, and audience... frown
(haven't been there myself, only seen pictures)

No that was the one disappointing thing. The organ hall was just too small to fit everybody. We used a portable organ which ended up being almost inaudible (partly because our brass was so loud). The brass made up for it though.
