I'm about to purchase the Hindemith Piano Sonata No. 2 in G as well as the complete Ludus Tonalis.
My question is this--which version of each should I buy? The only version of the Sonata I've found is the Schott edition, so unless anyone has any other suggestions for that, I'll go with the Schott.
For Ludus Tonalis, however, I've found the Schott edition but also the Vienna Urtext edition. The Vienna Urtext edition is a bit more expensive, but which one is "better"?
Also keep in mind that I'm a tuba major who just plays piano as a hobby--would one edition benefit me more, considering I'm not a "real" player?

Most of his music is only available through his publisher, Schott, and much of it is still in copyright, so you will not have a choice. I have seen the Vienna Urtext Ludus which claims to be based on more accurate sources than the Schott. If you are a scholar, you might want both, but if you are just doodling around, it probably does not matter.

I have a copy of the Schott edit of the 2nd piano sonata and it's well set - nice and clear and easy to read. So while you don't have much (any choice) the one that's available seems fine.

Another good thing about the sonata #2 (Schott edition, which is the only one I've ever seen) is that page turns are thoughtfully placed! Don't you *love* publishers that do that!

I agree with BDB, but either edition will do just fine.
