I should add Horowitz and Anton Rubinstein.

"Whom."

But, on topic:
Bach, Brahms.

As pianists: Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Horowitz.

Zimerman deserves special mention.

I'm not sure there is ever a good way to be hit with bricks.

For me...it's probably Mozart and Clementi. I'm a sonata kinda guy.

I'd say Beethoven. I'm a sonata kinda guy.

Liszt seemed like a real good man though.

I am not in the business of quoting famous names that I never knew personally. I admire their output (mostly) but I do not admire them as people because I don't know them that way and I have nothing to prove by choosing the popular answers.

I admire Yo-Yo Ma. A musician with exceptional ability and skill, but also a down-to-earth, personable, and likable human being. He plays some of the most beautiful and complex music out there, but his attitude proves that he enjoys the music, and not any false sense of sophistication - that is what I truly admire. I have met him and spoken with him and he seems like a genuinely good person.

Don't you ever get the sense of knowing somebody intimately after playing their compositions? After playing a sizable portion of their music, I feel like I am closer to Bach, Liszt, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff than I am to anyone I've ever actually met.

Well, I agree to some extent but I still wouldn't say I admire them. Respect, maybe. I respect Beethoven but I don't know if I'd say that I admire him. Admiration would be a personal thing too as well as based on musical reasons, and it seems silly (just in my opinion) to reserve admiration for musicians from a long time ago for the reasons I said. Just my thoughts.
