We are thinking of buying a piano (to be correct, I am trying to convince my husband on this).
I love music and know some, but not much. I want to encourage my children to learn to play the piano but they are still young (4 ½ and 6).
Needless to say I don’t think I want to pay a lot this first time around. Any opinions on Kawai versus Yamaha uprights?

Yes. Try the Schulze Pollmann, the Schimmel, or the Mason Hamlin first to name just a few.

Both Yamaha and Kawai make nice products, good reputations, quality.

Do a search on "best piano" and you'll get a lot of information on how big a piano to get, digital v. acoustic, and other brands offering value for under 5K, plus a lot of other advice on the confusing and sometimes frustrating process of piano buying!

Also, you'll get good information on negotiating-the price you see is most-often times not what you pay.

Try a Perzina 128 right -up and you won't believe you'r ear's.The sound ,the price etc.
Look for them and listen to them! All my friends have very expencive pianos but they are all wondering about this piano!
Sorry for my English but I am from the Netherlands.

I am from the Netherlands and I would like it to know a lot more about piano's and pianoplayers.

Both Kawai and Yamaha make excellent uprights, but they won't be your most inexpensive option. However, in pianos you often get what you pay for.

I recommend Larry Fine's "The Piano Book." It describes the features of a piano and how to judge piano quality, as well as offering descriptions of the major brands. Buy the price supplement, too, and that will give you an idea as to a good negotiating range to be in.
