http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000037LJ/ref=pd_rvi_gw_3/002-8938449-5146408?ie=UTF8 What do you guys think of this? Just by listening to the Feux Follets sample I really think the piano he recorded it on picked up quite a lot from his interpretation. I've never heard that etude played so well. I'm thinking about picking this recording up.

I thought the surviving recordings were actually piano rolls?

These are piano rolls, but as far as reflecting how Busoni played, they sound pretty genuine, unless I'm missing something quite important. Which is my question: what do you guys think of these recordings (them being piano rolls)?

The only word that comes to mind to describe Busoni's playing of FF from these piano rolls is stunning.
Check out his wonderful performance of the Polonaise No.2, with the Busoni Coda.
Gorgeous.
However, you really have to hear Busoni playing Norma and Don Juan if you want a tremendous thrill.
You just won't believe the playing.
As much as I love Hamelin, and as good as his recording of Norma is, well...listen to Busoni's and I won't have to search for superlatives.
And please remember, the piano rolls only show a fraction of what Busoni sounded like in a live performance.

Busoni must have been an absolute titan, bar none. What I would give for recordings of the Liszt series he did in Berlin in the 20's.
