Hello, everyone in this forum.

I usually hang out in Piano Forum to seek help on purchasing a piano. I think I have to ask a question here, which I believe the Pianist Forum can have a better answer than there.

I passed my ABRSM Grade 8 last year, and believe I can master a grade 5 piece fairly fast.

As my piano search goes on, I find myself don't have enough piece to test the versatility of one piano. I have plenty of pop songs to try the pianos. I can easily tell if this piano can play songs that require affection/feeling/mood. I have 1 or 2 jazz pieces with me too to do my shopping. However, I wish to extend my repertoire so that I can audition piano better.

I find myself lacking a Baroque and a 20th century piece. Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance for any input!

Daquin's Le Coucou is charming, popular, and fairly easy.
Bartok's 3- movement Sonatina shouldn't cause you too many problems and, like the Daquin, is a piece that is often programmed by very accomplished pianists as well as those less-experienced.

For 20th C, how about Prokofiev's 10th Vision Fugitives - Ridicolosamente - one page - good fun and a good piano test I would think, with some quick repeated notes...

For Baroque you could try a Bach invention or Scarlatti sonata.

For 20th C. you could try Hovhaness' Mountain Dance.

Wow, guess I should take some time and look for those scores and also practise them up!
Well, it's still the first time for me to know some of the pieces even the composers. I guess I should get myself more in classical!
Thanks a lot.

Pete,

I have attempted a Scarlatti sonata before, in E major. I can't recall the Longo number, somewhere around 40-60 I guess. Is that Baroque enough? (My impression of Baroque is like Bach's WTC.. Contrapuntal, repetition, sequence etc.)

BTW, any Debussy-like pieces? (Is Hovhaness's Mountsain Dance like that?)

Scarlatti lived at the same time as Bach, they were born and died within five years of each other, which would put him squarely in the Baroque period. Some of his music does seem to be moving towards the Classical style, but the keyboard instruments at his disposal, harpsichord, clavichord, etc., probably did not allow him to stray too far from the Baroque style.

Hovhaness is nothing like Debussy. If you are looking for a late Romantic/Impressionistic piece you could learn an easy Debussy, or something by Satie.

How about the Ravel Sonatine? Not too hard (at least compared to his other piano pieces).
