I have been taking piano lessons for 18 months. However, I feel like I am just learning songs. Is there a a more structured/pedantic approach to learning piano, or is playing songs the way to become a better pianist? My biggest desire is to play notes without looking at my hands or using the five finger position approach (e.g. more free style). Any suggestions?

Welcome to the board! Well there is nothing wrong with learning songs, especially if your teacher has an aim in mind with each one. I'd advise learning all the basics - scales, chords, key signatures, etc. and look to see how they apply to your music.

As a teacher it can be difficult to know exactly the right approach for each student, some need a lot of freedom, some need everything to be clearly laid out. If you're feeling a little directionless, try to let your teacher know that maybe you need more structure, or ask about the goals for each piece you do. Communication is the key

A good way to structure yourself is to learn a method or have an exersize routine. I recommend learning Hanon, that way you learn scales, octaves, arpeggios etc, and you can promote yourself to harder songs as your technique gets better.
