Purchase Grand Piano from dealer or Ebay?

Hey there! I have some basic questions concerning this subject as I have a friend who is considering buying a grand piano from Ebay. What are the advantages of buying a grand piano from a piano dealer? Does a grand piano need periodic adjustments and tunings when it is new? Does a dealer usually include this as part of the purchase? Will a piano obtain better sound as time goes by? Does a baby grand piano size utilize the design or sound capabilities of a grand piano over an upright? Please educate me so I can better advise my friend.

1. The warranty will likely be valid or enforceable. Better chance of getting a well-prepped instrument. You actually buy the piano you've played before the purchase. 2. Yes. 3. Yes. 4. Some pianos sound their best right when they're new. Some pianos need to be "played in" for a while [sometimes a short while, sometimes longer] before they sound their best. It depends on the maker and the type/amount of dealer prep done. 5. When comparing WITHIN brands, usually baby grands will have a better action then a large upright, but may have inferior sound quality to that of the large upright (talking about 5'-ish and smaller grands).

Actually, I sold my Bechstein Model A on e-bay, but I had the buyer fly in from Chicago to Long Island, picked her up at the airport and brought her to my home to spend the day playing and inspecting the piano BEFORE she bid on it. After she purchhased it I reimbursed her for the trip AND I payed the shipping on it to Chicago. That is the only way I would encourage someone to buy a piano on the internet.

Thanks USAPT. It's the old "treat others as you would like to be treated" philosophy......goes a LONG way in life!! I still get e-mails from this particular woman telling me how much she LOVES that piano.

Don't by a used piano from any source without haveing a qualified technician inspect it. If you can do this within the time frames of an EBay auction and with the distances involved, go for it. Understand you will get no service, warranty, help, delivery, tuning, recourse, etc. So the price better be GREAT!
