Are pianos in Europe tuned to the same frequency as here in the US? What about the UK? Anyone know?

I ask because I was listening to recordings of Schubert songs (yes, I am speaking here of songs) and there was one I especially liked which I have music for, so I decided to play along but found that my piano was tuned differently. Not just an out-of-tune sound, no, the piano in the recording was really tuned to a different pitch.

I can only answer for Germany but as far as I know pianos are tuned to 440 Hertz like in the US.
At least mine and those of my friends are.

I thought that 440 Hertz is a standard. No?

Yes, I think so. And on further thought I realized that the recording is on a record. Maybe my turntable is slow.

Bernard,
In fact, recordings are often at a different pitch than in real life. This is why for those who like to play along with recordings, it is necessary to have a turntable with a variable speed. Lenco of Switzerland used to make these and I have one. You adjust the turntable speed to "tune" it to your instrument.

Years ago, when I tuned pianos at Chicago's Orchestra Hall, they preferred A-442
