One that always does it for me: Beethoven's Archduke Trio, third movement. Hopefully I'll be able to find a violinist and cellist here at my school, because I want to perform this for next semester. That melody just speaks volumes to me. Take a look at my signature. That pretty much sums up how that movement makes me feel.

there is this one part in Geroge Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" that is pretty moving to me...its a slower part towards the end.

That is my absolute fav theme!!! Except I don't have the best recording of it. Just with the Royal Philharmonic, which kind of ruins the effect.

I'm getting myself into Elgar now. This weekend, I'm going to order Jacqueline du Pré's "Favorite Concertos" collection, simply for the Elgar Concerto, and Barbirolli's recording of the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, Op. 39 and Enigma Variations. I know that it will all be wonderful, except for maybe the Enigma Variations - I'm afraid they may quite puzzle me. (But probably wonderful for Aveu!)

What about the theme from Borodin's Polovtsian Dances? The one that was later stolen for "A Stranger in Paradise?" Or the third movement of the Brahms Double - absolutely addicting.

Most pieces by Chopin I have particularely fallen in love with his Nouvelle Etudes. They are so dreamy it's hard to explain...

oooooh, I can think of several favorites:
Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings
Rach....- Vocalize (performed vocal, not the orchestra versions)
Canteloube collection of Chants d'Auvergne (many)
Hector villa-lobos - Bachianas brasileiras No 5, Aria (Kiri te Kanawa) - just haunting melody with cello and vocal
I hope this wasn't suppose to be just piano!
Roberta

Rachmaninoff Symphony #3, many but especially the broad, sweeping melody introduced first by the cellos about 2 minutes into the third movement, depending on performance. It proceeds to be a recurring theme for the remainder of the movement.
I urge anyone who is not familiar with the 3rd to give it a couple of listens. You too may fall in love with it.
Has anyone noticed a common thread througout these many posts---Sergei Rachmaninoff!
I agree the point around Chopin, but to me the scope of Rachmaninoff's themes transcends many measures while Chopin's themes tend to be less sweeping.

Have you heard of Emil von Sauer's first piano concerto (E minor)? The theme of the trio of the scherzo is one that I really like.
Also, the Introduzione of the Waldstein Sonata, the theme of the second movement of Opus 111, and the main theme of the first movement of Saint-Saens' Third Piano Concerto.
But I definitely think what the composer does with the theme is also important. Many of the pieces I consider masterpieces from a compositional standpoint involve pretty banal themes.
