Well, Since getting my piano last week, I have been going insane.

I am working on

Greig:
Notturno
Waltze
Arietta

Beethoven:
Sonata in F minor (the rocket one cant remember opus)

Bach:
Prelude 12 WTC2

Brahms:
Waltz in Ab

Minor scales (ugh!)
and now that my teacher knows i have a good instrument, she has me doing Hanon (26 where we left off in the fall) to strengthen my fingers on the new action.

Nice, Necie!

I'm working on

Ravel
- Sonatine
- Menuet Antique

I'm shopping aroundfor some new pieces to learn as well. I'm thinking about a Scarlatti Sonata (K 87, in B minor) and perhaps a Chopin Etude and/or Liszt's Un Sospiro.

Beethoven:
Sonata in F minor (the rocket one cant remember opus)[/b]

That would be likely be Op.2 no.1, or Op. 57, Appassionatta.

Let's see, a bunch of things, some with more interest (read: time spent practicing) than others:

Debussy - The Girl With the Flaxen Hair

Beethoven - Op. 27 no.2 - "Moonlight" (originally learned in 1999 and reviving because I think my technique is better now)

Brahms - Intermezzo in A Major, Op. 118 no. 2 - my favorite piece for piano of all time -- finally I have enough experience to tackle it.

How is the Debussy coming? I almost chose that to break me into Debussy. I can pretty much sight read Le Petit Negre. My teacher says thats where most begin with Debussy. A friend suggested the Girl with Flaxen Hair.

Yep...the "rocket" one is Op. 2#1 (named after the Mannheim Rocket figure in the opening bars...)

As for me, I'm in total denial regarding what I should be working on right now.

Playing Debussy is such a completely different experience for me. Everything about it requires more thought about technique and timing. This particular piece is written in G flat, so it lies very comfortably under my small hands.

I can play it cleanly at about half tempo...so it's getting there. \:\)

Thats great! \:\) I need to work on some pieces that help me get my velocity up.... I do fine with slower pieces. Although I can play Mozart's Rondo ala Turka.... and i tend to play that fast.

For velocity, try Auguste Durand's Waltz in E Flat -- the tempo is presto and it's a really pretty piece.

What does "Bergamasque" mean, anyhow?

Thought about playing a movement of Ravel's Sonatine, but chose something easier by Debussy because I have a recital coming up and need to put a lot of effort into the etude I'm working on. It's a very nice piece, though, I think.

Too funny, Awakening - I just put down the Brahms Rhapsody when I started taking lessons (1 month ago). I'll pick it back up in a bit, though.

Deep piece. It's not as hard as it sounds, you could pick it up in a jiffy \:\)

My teacher will assign me new pieces this week or next, they will be:

a Bach English Suite (my guess nr 2 or nr 3)

trying to get Beethoven op 10, nr 3 polished \:\)

Scriabin Etude op 8, nr 3 (by my own urging hehehe)

Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody nr 10 (while keeping up the Petrarch Sonnet)

if time permitting I would love to begin Debussy Reflets dans L'eau

I don't know for sure, but I know that the ancient city of Pergamum (founded by a general of Mark Antony and mentioned by St. Paul in the New Testament) is known in Turkey as "Bergama" (or something like that. It's a cool place--if you ever have a chance to go there, do it.)

I believe there was a general fascination with Turkish things and Orientalia in general in Debussy's day. So I've always assumed that the Suite Bergamasque tied in with that fashion.

What an impressive list of pieces you all all working on! Hope you learn them well. ;-)

Roberta, here, a newbie to the forum.

I am now trying to get my fingers working again, after not playing much these last 10 years. A severe case of carpal tunnel syndrome showed its ugly face and my life went in an different direction.

But now, I am in search of a new upright, have been studying this forum, and got a new inspiration to play again.

I am warming up my fingers, and RE-learning pieces that I once knew very well.

Enjoying several Chopin's, Beethoven's Pathetique, Rachmaninoff's, and some semi pop stuff.

It would be so much more enjoyable on a 'really good new piano'.

Your suggestions make me want to practice more...

Roberta

well, it's not anything classical, but who says it has to be? anyway, i'm currently working on Alicia Key's 'If I Ain't Got You', and it's in G Major. at first i gave up on it, but then i bought the book back and tried again, and i have to say that i'm getting it. some parts of the song are hard, but i'm determined to learn the song, b/c i'm thinking about playing it in front of an audience at a recital.
when i saw a girl perform it in front of an audience and a guy play it in my local music building, i decided that i'm gonna learn the song if it's the last thing that i do. when i found myself getting the song, it made me wish that i had kept 'Songs In A Minor.'

Just finished the entire Rach 2 note wise... difficult feat as I am only 15 but it is getting pretty good, not performance ready yet though.

Learning:

Beethoven Pathetique sonata
Katchaturian (however you spell it) Tocatta
Schumann Romance in F# (for a competition in April, wish me luck \:D )
Debussy Claire de Lune
Brahms Rhapsody in G minor Op. 79 No. 2 (seems common around here \:D )
And on my free time:

I am aiming for all 4 Chopin Ballades, currently studying 1st and 4th Ballades right now, will go for 2 and 3 when I complete 1 and 4.

A bit ambitious, but I hope to complete my task \:D

If you can play Jeux D'eau you should be able to tackle it... I put it's difficulty somewhere between Jeux d'eau and Gaspard de la Nuit.

Jeux d'Eau, Barque sur l'Ocean and Ondine from Gaspard are three of my "must learn" pieces list, and it's a considerably small list!

Wow, we think alike! I love all three of the pieces on your "must learn" list, simply because they're on mine. I'm tackling them from Jeux D'eau, to Une Barque Sur l'Ocean, and then to Ondine. Hopefully, i'll learn them all before I go off to college in a couple of years.

I'm not working on anything because the action of my piano is being rebuilt. I keep my technique alive on the practice clavier and work on algorithmic composition code on the computer to keep my brain alive.

Good choice. I've played around with it before, but have never seriously attempted to learn it. High up on my pianistic 'to-do' list is to learn Miroirs in its entirety.

I put all of Ravel on my 'must learn' list!

I personally think Jeux d'eax is harder than Une Barque sur l'ocean.

Ives: The Housatonic at Stockbridge (piano & voice)
Ravel: Le Gibet (got put on the back burner, but still plan on learning it)

This is the first time I've posted in the PC forum! I like threads like this, as they give me good ideas of new pieces to look for.

I am currently focusing most of my attention on
Fantasie Impromptu[/b]. BTW, pianodevo[/b], the last page has been the most difficult for me to memorize for some reason. And, even though I know I am playing the notes correctly, it still doesn't sound "right"... Don' t know what I am doing wrong.

Still plugging away at Beethoven's Pathetique[/b] (all three movements). After working on it consistently for a few months, I now only take it out a few times a week, b/c the first movement drives me crazy! Don't get me wrong--I love the piece. I just can't seem to play it!!

Started Brahms Rhapsody in G minor Op. 79, No. 2[/b] at the same time as Fantasie Impromptu (about a month and a half ago, I think), but haven't gotten that far b/c the Chopin piece has taken over my piano-related life! I love it!

Just got a new Bach duet to work on--Concerto in D minor[/b]. It's so darn long, and I am having a hard time "connecting" to it... Have any of you worked on this? What did you think of it?

Neice,

just finished Arietta and Notturno myself! I'm looking for a third from the Lyrical pieces to add to the list. I'm going to try to record those two at the end of the month.

I'm almost finished with a John Field nocturne #4.

the list goes on!

Mister Rubato, I am doing a Waltz with mine. I am trying desperatly to memorize Arietta in the next few days. I want my recital to have all 3.

How bout Mrch of the Trolls to add to your list... I think it would go quite well. That was my original choice, but the length of it was a tad indimidating to learn and polish in less than a month for my recital.

I love Grieg!

When I last touched a piano...

Mozart K 310 Sonata (A minor)
Brahms Opus 119 pieces

But unfortunately I haven't had time to practice, nor have I had access to a piano. I've been trying to deal with four classes, being a TA for an undergrad statistics course, a new relationship, and studying for my Masters qualifiers.

I can never tell if I love or hate Prokofiev's 6th sonata...the opening bit seems like its bashing my head about, although it also really catches your ear...but then I guess the rest of it wins me over anyways.

That's the thing, I don't intend on doing any of the performance cliches that harm this piece, so hopefully if will be a fresh perspective. I hate[/b] the rubato that is traditionally taken in the beginning measures.

Necie,

Thanks for the recommendation! I've memorized Arietta, and most of Notturno(its taken me some time!. I've narrowed my selection to complete my Grieg trilogy to: March of the Trolls, Phantom, or Wedding Day at Troldhaugen. Which Grieg recordings do you have? I have Andsnes & Gilels.
Good luck on your recital!!!

i'm in a chopin phase right now. currently learning Prelude op45 and loving it.
i might go astray after the prelude and learn debussy arabesque1 and then come back to more Chopin. eventually going to attempt Sonata2 or 3.
nice to see so many mention brahms rhapsody2 i feel like i'm in some sort of special club \:\)
also polishing brahms f# minor(i think this is the key *ashamed*) capriccio op76 no1, it's so close to performance ready but just a spot or two that needs more consistency.
It's cool to see that people are inspired to play again by these forums. That's what happened to me about a year ago.

I have thoroughly concluded that the cadenza of the first movement of the Prokofiev 2 is utterly impossible. Therefore the piece doesn't exist.
