Hi. I'm planning to buy a piano and have visited three dealers in the area and have played on 6 different models...from Samicks to Steinways.

I have narrowed my list to the Yamaha U1 and Petrof 45". The Yamaha U1 is selling for 6K, while the Petrof is selling for 5.7K.

I wanted to ask your opinions about the price as well as the quality comparison. I found the Petrof more mellow, but was concerned about its dynamic range.

Yamaha U1 for $6k is OK from the prices I've read/heard of in the last year or so. Don't know about Petrof 45".

My impression of the U1 is that it's a time-proven war horse of a piano -- works well, very reliable, can take a good beating over time, and very consistent.

I have less experience playing Petrof uprights, but I'd agree with you that they tend to sound mellower than U1's.

Suggest you do a search on this forum for "Yamaha U1" and "Petrof upright/vertical" to dig up old posts discussing these two in the archive.

Good luck. \:\)

(p.s. You can probably get more responses to your queries if you post them in the "Piano Forum" instead of in the "Pianist Corner.")

(p.p.s. Go see this thread too , as it addresses a similar topic.)
