Hi, folks:

I'm itching for some new pieces to add to my repertoire. I've spent a lot of my time working on large pieces (Beethoven and Mozart Sonatas, etc.) and my knowledge of shorter pieces isn't too good--aside from Chopin and Debussy.

What are your favorite shorter pieces to play?

the Chopin preludes without a doubt.. fun to play, short, and some are quite a challenge..and the Scriabin preludes I recommend as well..the Shumann kinderszenen are nice too, shall I go on?

I'm working on Ginastera's Danzas Argentinas and I really like it. It sounds like you don't have contemporary pieces so maybe you should try that. I also really enjoy liebestraume and Un Sospiro by Lizst.

Thanks, everyone! These are great suggestions. I've always been curious about Scriabin, have played nothing by him at all.

Interesting about the Kinderszenen... I've just started playing them and am finding them to be deceptive. There's nothing "hard" about any of them, so for me the challenge is making sure they're exactly right, plus interpreted correctly. I've been having a good time working on the details on these pieces.

BTW, one of my absolute favorite memories was hearing Horowitz play "Traumerei" as an encore one one of his final (last?) tours. After dazzling everyone with his technical skills, he played Traumerei simply and absolutely beautifully... the only time I have ever heard an audience WAIT to applaud until the last echoes of the final chord died down... and even then, not wanting to break the spell by clapping. It was truly amazing.

Any opinions out there on Shostakovitch?
