Okay gang, here's the deal. I've always wanted to know exactly how many notes there are in the third Rachmaninoff concerto. So...I propose the following project: We count the notes. (I'm serious) When you have a few free minutes, pull out the score and count all the notes in a page, then post the page number and number of notes in this thread. To keep everything regulated, let's all use the orchestral score at www.sheetmusicarchive.net The rules: You must count EVERY note except for ties. This includes grace notes. A trill between two notes counts as 2 notes. Two notes tied together counts as 1 note.

This includes the orchestral parts as well, or just the piano?

Originally posted by The 89th Key: There are 8,702 notes. [/b] That sounds like an EXTREMELY low guess...especially considering there are 542 notes on page 65 (of Schirmer's) alone. Doing some simple math (total notes in the 7 pages listed, plus my count of the *probably* highest-density page), taking the average notes per page to be 180, we find that there are approximately 14,220 notes in the concerto (Schirmer's is 79 pages). Of course, now that I count, there are 885 notes on page 77 alone...so I'm sure that changes the average just a little. (Again, this is Schirmer's edition, not the sheet music archives.) My guess is somewhere between 14,000 and 18,000.

It looks like we're done with Mvmt. 1 File 1 now. There are 1655 notes in those 11 pages.

I was a bit bored, so I started on file 2:
Page 2.1 = 187
EDIT 2: Ah, now I see. It seems you counted the unison f in bar 3 as two notes while I counted it as one. I have updated my numbers accordingly.

I guess we're done with File 2 as well.
Total of pages in File 2: 2625 Overal total (Files 1 and 2): 4280
EDIT: Which cadenza shall we count? The one in big print, the ossia one, maybe both?

Out of curiosity, for those of us keeping tabs who have different versions...which cadenza is the "one in big print"? I assume the slower, louder cadenza?

Note: You are limited only 2 downloads a day (so if you're smart you download file 3/4 and 4/4 of movenment 1 today, so you can start )

I doubt Prokofiev 2 has more, simply because it's almost 15 mins shorter.

A new estimate, based on current numbers, places the concerto in the neiborhood of 21,000-23,000. Any bets it's even higher than that? 70:1 odds <18,000 6:1 18,000-20,000 Even money 20,000-24,000 2:1 24,000-26,000 3:1 26,000-28,000 5:1 28,000-33,000 11:1 >33,000

Counting notes? Yee gads and little fishes! You are actually going to count ALL the notes in the RACH 3!!! Shock, horror, gasp, etc. At first I thought "Oh my ," these people are mad... now I'm thinking "Must download Rach 3!!"
Oh, and for all the other aspiring note counters out there who want to download the rach 3 from sheetmusicarchive.net but who are frustrated by the whole 2 downloads a day thing... there is hope! After you've downloaded your two files, click Tools, Internet Options, and then Delete Cookies. This will allow you to download another two. Repeat process.
Yes, I know, cheating the system, evil, etc etc, but what can I say, I'm a PC guy.
Anyway, I'm not going to help on this thread (at least not yet; tests, tests and more tests), but I will check back later (if I remember) to see what the grand total is.
Gluck! (good luck)

Oh no! Don't give up! I had never thought of this before. Now I'm thinking that if one has a MIDI file of something, it would be handy to have a program showing the total notes for each instrument. Then one could fit some mathematical model to it, and prove how great these works are.

[/b] Some loonies have done that with Bartok's music - I read about half of a book by Erno Lendvai about Bartok, and there is one page that is basically a list: if you count the total number of 8th notes in this particular piece, and you multiply times the golden section (0.618) you get THE 8th note which starts the recapitulation; if you count the total number of 8th notes in THIS piece, and you multiply times the golden section (0.618) you get THE 8th note which starts the recapitulation; etc.... for basically an entire page.

Rach. 3 never ceases to amaze me. Beauty in its purest sense, IMHO--'tis inspiration from the Highest. Musically, Benjamin Francis http://www.myspace.com/benjaminfrancis

I have the MIDI files. Show me the script and it's done.
Otherwise, let's keep counting, folks!

[/b] :p (I'm just teasing you. ) I'm a music history major and piano principal - which basically gets all the benefits of being a piano major, but I don't have to prepare 4 pieces for a jury every semester (juries are optional for me), and I also get a musicology degree (instead of a performance degree)

Might have been easier to use the file on www.piano.ru/library.html, as its the two piano reduction. Oh well.

Probably not easier. Just less pages, but more notes per page.

No recounts!
However, I do plan to count the notes in a MIDI file of the work I found.
I expect, though, that the MIDI file will contain many MORE notes than is correct - remember a MIDI file will count every note of a trill, so while we counted trills as 2 notes, a trill in a MIDI file could be anywhere from 4 to 100 notes depending on the length of the trill.
If the MIDI number is within a decent range, though, I'll call our project a smashing success!
Thanks to all who undertook the project, this was fun!
