After getting done with some accompanying today. There is an issue I would like your opinion on. Pageturners! What is the role of the page turner? They do more than just turn pages. A recent comrade of mine proclaimed that during one piece I (the pageturner) looked at the audience. Is that frowned upon? let me know your thoughts.

i'm lost at your question. what's your question anyway? who's looking at the audience, you or the page turner? i guess that you're free to look anywhere unless you need to read score, while the page turner however has to look at the score all the time, assuming that's what they do.

I am of the opinion that the page turner should be as inconspicuous as possible in executing his/her duties of turning the pages, and should be more or less motionless with eyes on the score throughout a performance.

I'm not aware, however, that it is considered a mortal sin for a page turner to glance at the audience. I would think, however, that any intentional visual contact with any member of the audience should be avoided; the page turner is not there to attract attention to him/herself at any time.

They do?

Well, the page turner is usually expected to carry the music on stage and put it on the music stand opened to the appropriate page. S/he is also expected to carry the music off stage after the performance, is that not so? I am not aware, however, that a page turner has any other duties.

As old Bach might have put it:
"There is nothing remarkable about page turning. All one has to do is turn the right pages at the right time, and the pianist does the rest."

Best wishes,
"Passions, violent or not, may never be expressed to the point of revulsion; even in the most frightening situation music must never offend the ear but must even then offer enjoyment, i.e. must always remain music." -- W.A.Mozart

Uhmm, Kreisler... I can't believe you didn't know the other jobs of a page-turner.

I've been page turner a few times for an organist, that means that I have to pull stops too.
The page turner would ideally be invisible. So I make sure to wear "soft" shoes (since stops are on both sides of the bench) and I focus totally on the music all the way knowing what comes next (hopefully ;\) ).
The page turner is there to make things easier for the performer and has to be trusted to do his job and not gain any attention.
