Hi,

About "Wladyslaw",

Definitely Polish-- what I'm not sure of is whether the two l's are the "hard" l's (same as English 'l'), or "soft" l's (usually notated with a slash, wounds like "wu"). The "Wladyslaw" is most likely: VLAH-dis-WAHV. Any Polish speakers on the forum??

Well, dear Sam, those are the "American" pronounciations. I had some difficult time, many years ago, to understand the names of the composers when a pirate station in our area employed an American guy to announce the pieces in the "classical hour".

It is a pity that the English (IPA) phonetic notation is seldom used anymore. American dictionaries don't use it. OTOH , the British still use it - I think. I have several (old) books by Daniel Jones dealing with pronounciation and using the phonetic notation.

See Phonetic notation and

an interactive flash at International Phonetic Alphabet

Unfortunately the phonetic notation uses many special fonts.

Also see Shostakovich pronounciation - this site uses aonther phonetic notation - you click on "Pronounciation key" to see examples.
