#462933 - 02/10/09 01:09 AM Looking for a good 'Moon River' arrangement...

I'm always looking for more composers who print arrangements of popular songs. I play some classical (up to grade 9 pieces) but spend more of my time playing the likes of Yanni, Yiruma, David Lanz, Yann Tiersen, etc. I would SO LOVE to find a dynamite arrangement of Moon River, but don't seem to have any luck. I'm not terribly skilled at transcribing music myself so would like to have something that I could just learn off the page. I hope someone can give me some suggestions of where to look.
Thanks!!

Kar, can I suggest that you might get more responses to your question in the 'Pianist Corner - Non Classical' forum? \:\)

Gimme a break, btb, I adore that song! Not all of us in the Pianist Corner are hopeless musical snobs.

Match ya for a Cole Porter tune... or shall we talk 'echt' British blokes... got lots of Ivor Novello if you want the pdfs...

My kingdom for another showing of 'Gosford Park'...

And of course you know about the 'really' early Novello family... Roman Catholics (horrors) slightly before the 'Emancipation'... they just pretended to be publishers... yeah, secretly invading the hallowed Anglicism of London... but they were only supplying music to the chapels of the Portuguese, Italian and Spanish embassies.

This was where Mass was truly celebrated... and conveniently cocking a snook at the Church of England.

Not wishing to share your hurrah at the sight of Oliver Cromwell’s ghost, clattering down the Mall ... no doubt to butcher a King ... let it suffice to say that my contact with Ivor Novello’s music is fortunately limited to a few personal nostalgic songs including the inevitable

"We’ll Gather Lilacs" ... but, looking back ... this has a whiff of English dreamy insular longing ... out of step with today’s raucous chase.

"My Dearest Dear" ... in similar vein ...

and then the bloody (swear word)
"Keep The Home Fires Burning" ... but brought great cheer.

These days, I only get these few songs, dare I say gems, out of mothballs at my piano when the coast is clear ... and only my dog is listening.

No arrangement could make this awful tune bearable.

I was waiting to see a "good" arrangement of Moon River. What btb posted was not an arrangement, but just the conventional vocal/piano score.

Regards,

What rot BruceD to suggest of the "Moon River" download, that
"What btb posted was not an arrangement, but JUST the conventional vocal/piano score." ... Yikes!!

Henry Manicini’s keyboard arrangements were the in-thing in the 1960s ... his arpeggiated LH style rambling in and out of the simplified RH Theme might have had the original composers wishing they had come up with such top hit popularity.

My HENRY MANCINI Piano Solos includes ... (composer in brackets)

Theme From Love Story (Francis Lai)
Theme From the Molly Maguires (Mancini)
Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head (Bacharach)
Jean (McKuen)
Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet (Rota)
Patton Theme (Goldsmith)
Love Theme From the Adventurers (Jobim)
Theme From Z (Theodorakis)

My 2-pages of "Moon River" (from a different Compendium) show exactly the same arpeggiated style as the foregoing arrangements by Mancini ... forgive me if I spit blood at the party-pooping rot ...
"JUST the conventional vocal/piano score".

Nothing quite like an arranger arranging his own "Moon River".

Why do you always feel the need to be such a stick in the mud? Oh... right, troll, forgot.

Anyways, I liked it btb, thanks. It's a good song. ;\)

Glad to oblige Schmoe ... "Moon River" must have made a million or two for Henry Mancini.

It’s a good tactic on the Forum, to be helpful and unassuming ... and try to keep petty personal opinions under strict rein ... it takes a bit of time for new-boys to realize that airing likes and dislikes can be boring ... without a debating rationale .

Hi GreenRain,
I’m not sure I can go along with "bringing out" the RH mid-notes ... they give added dimension to the RH drumming chords (like an adjective
qualifying a noun) ... but are merely an echo of the notes contained in the LH chords ... there is no conscious extra dynamic given to the RH mid-notes.
